A Poem on How To Recognize Revolution, Media, Commercialism, and Capital Obsession

Tonight on Fox News the revolution
will be televised. We are selling
T-shirts and looted DVD players
on ebay. Come get your commemorative
bric-a-brac, come see the horde
in the streets and we'll give you
five dollars for each scar received
from interracial police brutality.

This is the riot of being
home alone, doing nothing
to save your self. Grab a shotgun
and defend what you love
from everyone you
wanted to love last week.

I thought I knew who I was--
another voice in the rising
din of dissent, an individual
for mankind's unrelenting need--
but now I understand my body
is probably just another place
to keep a hot bullet
on its way into a crowd
sleep-walking through
display windows with bricks
and signs in their hands.

All we have to take away
from the authorities
is what they're selling us.

But it doesn't matter,
they'll still sell you the fist
you smashed into your neighbor's
jaw for walking into your house.

They'll sell you the gun
you'll have to keep loaded
under your pillow
while you sleep--every siren
you hear in the night
just another boat
sailing us into slave-trade.

This just in: two men found
dead again, a small child
stolen, caves are collapsing
and the rescue team
is digging several holes to fit
cameras into, whatever you're
eating right now is poisonous,
certain animals are carrying
certain diseases that may make
you certainly paranoid,
blacks and hispanics are moving
into your neighborhood,
terror is at an all time high.
And now a word
from our sponsors.
