Tiny Prefab Homes, Eco-Friendly Living

Tiny Homes that Give You More Bang for the Buck

Lehticia Leo
Aside from my makeup and choice of coffee, everything about me screams minimalist. I enjoy décor with clean lines, I'd rather shop at "Banana Republic" than "Hot Topic" and I prefer classical music over techno. So, you can only image how excited I was when I came across itsy-bitsy prefab homes that minimize our carbon footprint! Though I won't be able to live in these homes in the near future because I live with a scruffy 6 and a half foot tall musician (my boyfriend); hopefully, when we get older and he shrinks a little we can move into one of these tiny prefab homes.

Tumbleweed Tiny House Company

These houses are practical, luxurious and will meet all of your domestic needs. In 1997, the creator of the company, Jay Schaeffer decided to take the plunge and built himself a home that measured a total of 89 square feet. Since then, he has been creating blue prints and prefab homes for his growing customer base around the country. As of mid-2009, the current home sizes available range from 65 square feet to 130 square feet and are priced between $36,997 and $49,997. If you are looking for a bit more space, Tumbleweed Tiny House Company has got you covered. Tumbleweed offers reader friendly home building plans for homes ranging in size of 251 square feet to 774 square feet; all home building plans are priced at $695.

The Loft Cube

Do you dream of becoming a home owner but just can't afford to buy a house in the city? If this sounds like your dilemma, Loft Cube is the answer to your prayers. Loft Cube was created for city dwellers who want to become homeowners but aren't willing to fork over half a million dollars to buy a cramped home in a bad area. Loft Cube is meant to sit on building rooftops. The Loft Cube comes equipped with everything you can ever need and comes in at just under 420 square feet. Somehow, the genius architects managed to make this home look and feel far more spacious than it actually is. The Loft Cube is priced at $136,000 but will cost several thousands more if you want customization. You'll get the penthouse feeling for a mere fraction of the cost. All you need is to lease a rooftop with a great view of the city skyline or river. Another plus: if you ever decide to relocate to the countryside or suburbs, you can always take your tiny prefab home with you and park it in a residential lot.
