Tips on What to Do when You Have a Bad Ignition

Mich Butler
If your car is not starting but the engine turns over fine, you might have a problem with the ignition switch. Usually it is an electrical problem. And those can usually be fixed with minimal parts. Occasionally it is a problem with the switch itself and you may have to replace it.

Like with any other big problem you are going to want to get a repair manual for your specific vehicle. You can find one either in a bookstore, hardware store, or even online. This will be a great help to you not only now, but also when something else goes wrong with your car.

One of the first things you should try is not turning your key until it stops. This may sound weird but sometimes a key can wear out. What happens is the key will turn so far that it turns off the ignition and only works the starter motor. If this is the case gently turn your key until the starter motor engages and no more. This should allow the ignition to be turned on and the starter at the same time.

If that does not fix the problem you should check the fuses. Sometimes there is a different fuse for the starter and the ignition so check them all. If you see one that does not look right, whether it is because it is clouded or corroded or burnt out, replace it. Even if they do not look bad take them out, check them for corrosion and put them back in. then try it.

If your ignition still is not working you should try the wiring. One of the wires could be loose, or disconnected. If it is reconnect it and see if that solves the problem. The big thing with this is the wire that has the problem is usually hidden inside the dashboard or steering column.

If you find that the switch in your car is bad you will have to replace it. It can be a little expensive to get a new one if you can find a new switch for your specific vehicle, but a generic in your local store that sells auto parts. Fleet Farm and Wal-Mart are good places too look. Make sure the switch can work both the ignition and the starter; otherwise you will have to put in another switch in to work the starter.

If that still does not work, look up more specific information about your model and make of car.
