To begin with, you need to decide, are you more comfortable actually drawing out your creations, or do you feel more comfortable designing with the assistance of a computer? If you want to draw your designs out, then likely some art classes will come in handy so that you actually know how to properly sketch the designs, rather than just having some lines on the paper that are very hard to distinguish.
If you choose to do your designing on the computer, you will need a good graphics program, excellent knowledge on how to use it, as well as likely a graphics tablet. This will enable you to have the greatest amount of control over the way in which you create your designs. These tools will help you to design your creations using digital methods, and while maybe not as useful for someone first getting started, they can become a very useful and helpful option as you continue to learn and explore the choices that are available in clothing design.
It is also a very wise idea to look at the types of designs that are successful. While of course everyone takes parts of ideas, there is plenty of room for those who are truly creative and unique in their designs. If all you are doing is copying the shape, style and fabric of another designer, you are not likely to do as well. However, taking the extra time to create something that is completely unique and entirely yours will ensure that you are able to have the greatest success possible.
It is also a good idea to look into taking some clothing design classes. These will help you to further improve upon your skills, and ensure that you are making the right choices for your particular situation, while connecting with professionals who can guide you the best way possible. By dedicating a few months to school and obtaining the proper tools for the job, you can turn your dreams of being a clothing designer into a reality quickly and affordably and all without the troubles of a television show.
