Tips for Applying for and Obtaining Government Grants

Kristi Patrice Carter
For individuals who want to attend college but don't have the money to pay for it outright, there are a number of government-funded opportunities that will help. Government grants are quite popular, and pay for an individual to attend college under certain requirements and situations. Government grants are preferable to loans because they do not have to be paid back the way loans do. With the following tips, individuals will have a better chance of applying for and obtaining government grants.

Fill out the FAFSA

Individuals who wish to further their education but don't have the funding for college should start by filling out the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This application will help bring different kinds of funding opportunities to those individuals, based on their ability to pay for college and the tuition costs of the college they wish to attend. The FAFSA is typically available in most guidance counselor's offices and is also available online at FAFSA.

Look into Academic Excellence Grants

There are some grants available for students who have shown academic excellence in certain subjects or in general. These are grants which reward the student for his or her devotion to learning and for the grades they have kept so far. There are a number of grants like these, which individuals can use to attend college. Many can be applied for again and again, for use in more than one semester. Some of the grants can be combined while others cannot. One can learn more about academic excellence grants at Student Aid.

Check out Grants.gov

Students can use grants.gov to locate different education grants that will help them attend college as well. This website maintains a listing of all grants offered by the US government, including college grants. There is a keyword search tool on the website which allows individuals to quickly search for the kinds of grants they need. Once the individual has searched, they will be given a list of relevant grants to browse. By checking the details of each grant, one can determine whether or not they would be eligible for the grants. Applications are available on the website as well so individuals can quickly apply for the grants they are seeking.

Correctly Fill out Your Applications

When filling out government grant applications, it's important that the individual reads over the application completely before starting. This will help familiarize them with the questions and information that is needed. It's also important to ensure that every question is answered correctly and that there are no errors or mistakes on the application. Having a friend or family member proofread the application can help ensure that all of the information is correct and that the application is easy to understand and free of errors.

The applications should be placed in a large envelope without being folded, and sent in plenty of time to reach the destination before the grant application due date. Adequate postage should be affixed to the envelope as well.

By using the information above, students can find grants that will help them attend college, even if they don't have the funding to pay for it themselves.
