Tips on How to Approach a Celebrity

Ben M

I recently made an absolute fool of myself recently in front of a beautiful musician, and after a brief stint with Social Anxiety Disorder I've decided to write an article on the proper ways to approach a celebrity. If you're like me, I get easily star struck when I spot a celebrity and often times it leaves me blushing and fumbling for words. The reality of it is celebrities are people too, and they certainly enjoy their privacy like anyone else. Still, if you're finding it hard to resist the temptation to talk to him or her then use the following steps to ensure that you have a pleasant interaction.

Be patient

You'll get your chance to talk with them if you're just patient. Wait for an appropriate time to approach the celebrity. For instance, if the celebrity is on the phone or in the middle of dinner then more than likely you're interruption won't be appreciated. At that point they'll either decline an autograph or photo opportunity and you'll feel terrible.

The approach.

Once you've worked up enough nerve and the time is appropriate, then approach the celebrity with a confident smile and get their attention by addressing them as either "Mr." or "Mrs." It's polite and you'll seem professional. Also, pay them a compliment so that you show a familiarity with their work.

Bond with them.

If you share similar interests or you have something in common, don't be afraid to tell them this. By sharing a bond you're creating a comfortable atmosphere for the celebrity and they'll be more willing to take the time out to take a picture or sign an autograph. When the time comes to take a picture or get an autograph, be sure that you have the necessary items prepared. Don't make the celebrity wait for you to go searching around for a pen or set up the photo opportunity. Keep in mind that they do this all day long.

Be careful with certain topics.

Don't be nosey and insist on talking about a celebrity's personal life. Only talk about things of public nature such as their work, music, or art. Celebrities are insistent about keeping their private life private, and you have no right to ask those types of questions. Unless the celebrity brings it up, stay clear of this topic of conversation.

Watch for signs of impatience.

Remember, the celebrity is being nice and considerate by taking a few minutes from their life to talk with you. For instance, if they're in a time crunch and it appears that they are rushed, then be considerate and wrap your conversation up. Their body language is a big indicator of whether or not they're interested in talking. Do them a favor and don't drag the conversation on and on, because the fact of the matter is they've probably heard every conversation on Earth from a fan. If you can truly tell they want to move on, just let them ago and enjoy the moment you had.

Pay a compliment again.
Pay a sincere compliment and thank them for their time before they leave. When you leave, be discreet about the celeb's presence, because I'm sure they don't want anymore attention attracted to themselves.

  • Pay a compliment to the celebrity.
  • Avoid personal topics and only talk about the celebrity's profession.
  • Be considerate of their time. Don't drag the conversation on and on.
Be discreet when you're getting an autograph or picture. Most celebrities wouldn't appreciate you attracting other people to the area.

Really nice tips. I've never met a celebrity, but I like to imagine it, and I always think I'll make a total fool of myself or disturb them. This will help if I ever end up in a situation like that.
