Tips to Avoid Getting Sick at Disneyland

Maggie Blake
It's no surprise that many people feel that visiting Disneyland is a lot of fun. However, being that Disneyland is a place that is visited by tens of thousands of people per day, it should be no surprise to anyone that there is a lot of potential for contracting illness. With so many hands sliding along railings and holding onto the handles and lap bars of rides, these places can be some of the most germ covered surfaces in the park. Additionally, having to share restrooms with thousands of other Disneyland guests can expose visitors to lots of germs that they would not always come into contact with. And although the Disneyland staff does a very good job of keeping the park and restrooms clean considering the amount of people bustling through each day, all of the risk is not eliminated. Simply being in such close proximity to so many other people and their germs for extended periods of time each day is enough to raise the risk of contracting illness during a visit to Disneyland. If you would like to learn of some simple ways to avoid getting sick during your Disneyland visit, consider the following tips!

Try not to touch the railings too much while standing in line - Railings are a kid magnet, and I have personally seen some kids do some very gross things with their hands and then immediately wrap those hands on the railings while waiting in line. Kids are also often just the right height so that any spray from coughs and sneezes lands directly on the railings, as well. So, you may want to think twice before running your own hands along the railings if you want to avoid getting sick during your Disneyland visit.

Carry hand sanitizer with you - If you are going to ride any of the Disneyland attractions, you will obviously have to touch handles and lap bars on these rides. To increase your chances of avoiding getting sick, simply use a bit of hand sanitizer after rides.

Steer clear of sick people, if possible - During our many visits to Disneyland, there have been several times that we have found ourselves standing in line directly next to children who were clearly ill. Perhaps some families can't reschedule their Disneyland trip to accommodate simple childhood illnesses like colds, flus, and chicken pox (my own daughter caught the chicken pox at Disneyland), or just feel it isn't necessary. Unfortunately, that puts the other guests at risk of contracting their illnesses. Do not assume that parents will not bring sick children to the park, because they will, and they do. We have seen everything from kids who are clearly feverish, to kids who are obviously suffering from a severe head cold, to kids who were actually vomiting. And although some of these symptoms could be caused by non contagious issues like allergies and getting spun around a bit too much on a ride, oftentimes they are caused by true illness. If you find yourself in line directly next to guests who appear to be ill, you could opt to allow several people behind you to go ahead of you in line.

Wash your hands when you can - Fortunately, Disneyland restrooms are always well stocked with hand soap and paper towels. And as we all know, washing your hands during the day helps you to avoid getting sick.

These simple tips should help you to avoid getting sick while at Disneyland. After all, you want to take home souvenirs, not the flu!
