Ergonomics is serious business. To clarify the discussion, Merriam-Webster defines ergonomics as "an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely - called also biotechnology, human engineering, human factors. If you have ever used a computer where the monitor was not adjusted proper to your eye level, or sat in a chair and had your feet swinging off the floor, or even felt awkward hand movements while keyboarding, chances are you need tips to avoid pain in the neck while keyboarding, and tutelage on proper ergonomics.
Let's start with abuse. You know when you have been working at the computer too long. Be kind to your neck and the rest of your body. Limit the amount of time you keyboard and take frequent breaks. This is one of the first preventive tips to avoid pain in the neck while keyboarding that is beneficial to your overall health. Secondly, posture is absolutely everything. Check your posture periodically. The more you slump and perch your neck forward, the more pain you can expect to feel in your neck. In fact you will feel a lot of tightness in your upper back and neck which if not corrected will eventually lead to chronic pain.
If you feel your neck getting tight stop what you are doing and do a few neck exercises. Bend the neck from one side and then to the other. Then rotate the neck from left to right followed by a forward and backwards motion. The goal is to stretch the neck each direction to get a complete stretch. If not corrected this can later lead to serious neck and spine conditions.
Let's talk preventative measures again regarding tips to avoid pain in the neck while keyboarding. If you are the only one using your computer you should adjust your working area, even customize to your body type. As computer jockeys we must learn to have excellent body mechanics in order to perform the functions of our needs, wants, and passions - which is generally keyboard related if spending large amounts of time on the computer.
There are a couple of rules of thumb to follow in adhering to tips to avoid pain in the neck while keyboarding. Your chair should be comfortable and adjusted where your feet are touching the floor, knees should be lower than the hips. Ideally a chair with a reclining back is what is preferred. Sit erect with your head properly balanced without jutting it out. Your keyboarding (arms and hands positioning) should be positioned with the elbows at approximately 90 degrees and the forearms level with the floor. Your monitor should be positioned at eye level directly in front of you.
If you find you are craning your neck, you are not positioned ergonomically correct. Again the key is to use the tips to avoid pain in the neck while keyboarding as efficiently and effectively as possible. By focusing on your posture regularly, you will learn to check yourself when you form is not proper. If you are using copy, get a book stand to place it on to keep your neck position in the proper position, otherwise again you will be craning your neck. Most of these rules apply to Desktop Computers as Laptops present their own challenge. For laptops you must be kind to your body and take as many breaks as is necessary to avoid pain.
Most importantly following the tips to avoid pain in the neck while keyboarding will help lead to healthier body mechanics and let's face it, will help you avoid pain in the neck! Use moderation and be kind to you body, after all you only have one.
