It doesn't have to be a costly endeavour. As well, caring for your yard adds to your own benefit, as our yards are an extension to our homes. Yards add extra living space and can be a great place to entertain family and guests. So, it stands to reason that one would only want to keep it well maintained and beautiful to enjoy.
Lawn Care
It goes without saying, that your lawn can make or break the beauty of your yard. If it is dry, patchy, full of weeds or left to grow out of control, it can create an eyesore to the entire neighborhood. However, looking after a lawn can be quite costly and very time consuming. There are some very simple ways to still have a lovely lawn, yet not add too much extra expense to your budget or demands to your time.
If your lawn is patchy, purchase some seed and spread it around the yard periodically throughout the summer months. With a little bit of regular watering and some help from mother nature, you can be sure to have a luscious, green lawn in no time. No matter what size your yard is, even a little bit of green lawn can add so much color and curb appeal. Maintaining it's length is also a must. Take the time to mow it, keeping it well manicured.
If you have a lot of hills and valleys on your lawn, fill the holes with a good supply of top soil. Eventually the grass will grow through those areas, making your yard a lot more level, which in turn makes it a lot easier to mow and maintain.
If you are concerned about water conservation and worry that a huge lawn will only mean a lot of watering, you may want to consider growing small patches of lawn throughout your yard, to still maintain some greenery. You can section off pieces of your yard for lawn and then surround it with flower beds, patio areas and decking, or even crushed rock pathways.
Planting Lots Of Flowers
Flowers are the simplest and most inexpensive way to beautify a yard. They need very little watering and certain varieties, such as petunias, will flourish in both sunny and shaded areas. Hanging baskets or flower pots with brightly colored flowers, strategically placed around your outdoor living area can add so much spark to any yard.
If you happen to have fir trees, whether it be one or just a few, you might notice that the area around the tree is bare and unappealing. Trees, especially the fir variety, are notorious for absorbing whatever moisture is around them. It's almost impossible to keep a lawn growing near these big trees, unless you can afford to keep a garden hose running under them continuously. A good remedy for this is to circle the dry areas around the tree with either large rocks or decorative stone. Then add enough top soil (approximately 2 feet all around) and plant flowers.
Adding Trees and Shrubbery
Trees, shrubbery and hedges can add a lot of greenery to your yard. They usually need very little watering and do well to thrive, relying on only rainy days to keep them nourished. If you plant trees, try to use the variety that have blossoms during the summer months. This will add a beautiful, extra burst of color to the yard.
Shrubbery and hedges can cut down the amount of lawn you might have to maintain, yet they still add that splash of green to your yard. They can also help to section off certain parts of your yard, adding some privacy or helping to define specific areas from others. However, you need to be sure to keep them well trimmed in order to maintain their beauty.
Decks and Patios
One might not think of a deck or patio as adding beauty to the yard, but it most definitely can. They also add that extra living space for family barbeques and gatherings, as well as cutting down on the amount of lawn you might otherwise need to have, filling up the space in your yard. If you keep your decks well maintained (sanding and staining them every couple of years), it will give you years of use and pleasure. You can spark them up by adding potted plants and hanging baskets, on and around them.
If you happen to have a rather large yard, there is no reason why you can't have more than one deck or patio. Sometimes it's nice to have a choice of whether you sit in the sun or the shade, so a second patio might be a nice option. Again, this can cut down the amount of lawn you'd need to have, making your yard easier and less costly to maintain.
Another option, might be to build a "floating" deck. You can either set this alongside your main deck for added space, or build it so that it can be moved (with a fair amount of ease) from one part of your yard to another. Again, this might be to either avoid certain sunny areas at certain times of the day or as a way to make use of every inch of your yard.
Fencing Can Add Beauty
A well maintained fence can also add so much appeal to your yard. Keeping it repaired, and well painted or stained can add both beauty and value to your home and yard. Fences also help to define property lines, as well as adding much desired privacy from your neighbors.
Yard Ornaments
Sometimes yard ornaments can add a nice, personal touch to your yard and/or garden area. Garden centers have a vast array of lawn decorations to choose from, that can suit everyone's budget and preference. Placing different ornaments around the yard can add an extra splash of color, as well as giving a sense of country-side appeal.
Other ways to add ornamental appeal are ponds with miniature bridges, wishing wells or lattice arches on walkways.
All these ideas are ways to make your yard work for you, extending your living space out onto the outdoors. By making our yards more appealing, we not only help to beautify our neighborhoods, but we can enjoy them all the more during the summer months. Beautifying your yard, gives you a more enjoyable and relaxing place to escape to.
