Tips for Beginning Babysitters

Manda Spring
Babysitting is one of the most popular jobs amongst teens still to this day. When I was growing up it was even more so. I guess you could call me an expert on the subject because I babysat so much and so often that it led to a career as a child care provider. But potential babysitters, especially today, need a lot more guidance an education then when I was beginning. Some people would ask why this is so let me explain a few reasons:

First, when I was one of the many babysitters in the world we had respect for the family, the parents and the children in which we cared for. It was a respect that was uncompromised and we knew what our job was. Throughout the years our society has become so lax that most teens have respect for themselves and that's about it. I am not saying that all are like this but most- no matter how difficult it is for parents to grasp it is a fact and usually by a babysitters own admission.

Second, the children that need the babysitters are often times overly rambunctious as they are not as docile as they used to be. So, tips should be set into place to allow babysitters to deal with the 'hell on wheels' child.

Third, many new complications and emergencies are more of a threat than ever before so babysitters need to be aware to handle whatever their time might hold for them. If more parents shared openly with their beginning babysitters then perhaps a large portion of severe and even fatal accidents could've been avoided.

Regardless of whether you are parents of babysitters or if you are an employer of occasional babysitters this guide can offer tips on different areas to talk to the babysitters about various important and informative subjects. Take the time no matter your role in this situation; you'll be glad you did. Responsibility lands on the parents to explain and teach so safety is just a nice thought but a way of life.

Babysitter Tips: #1 Emergency Plans

This is a subject that really needs a lot of attention by both the parent and the employer. The parent should be able to have a phone plan and emergency techniques that are ran by the babysitters often and more importantly before they go out for a job.

This should include a cell phone with all numbers needed such as fire, police and home. CPR should be taught as pools, poisons and other elements are of more readily available in almost every home.

Babysitter Tips: #2 Babysitters May Experience Anger

There are so many ways to control anger and temper when some kids push the limits too hard. It is so important to teach babysitters how to control these issues before they get out of hand.

Babysitter Tips: #3 Babysitters Should Be Aware of Safe Disciplinary Tactics

Both the parents and the employers should talk openly to the babysitters about what disciplinary tactics work and are acceptable. For mom and dad you should be extra careful as your child's legal future may be at risk. Many years of probation and court convictions for inappropriate actions can mess up their goals and can easily be avoided. This is probably the most ignored issue.

Tips for Babysitters: Conclusion

The point of this article is to make beginning babysitters more aware and efficient in their tasks. It is also to educate parents and raise awareness as to the concerns for the babysitters and the children being watched.
