Advice for First Time Hikers

J. Motes
Here are some tips for beginning hikers to help them have a fun and safe time in the woods. Hiking is a great way to get outside and enjoy nature while getting some exercise at the same time. Hiking is also inexpensive as specialized equipment is not required unless staying overnight and then the equipment required is simple and relatively inexpensive. Regardless of where a hiker is going or how far they are going to go the following guidelines can help make the trip more enjoyable.

Learn About the Area

Many national and state parks and forests have hiking trails and websites that can provide a lot of information on the trails. Information may include sites of interest along the trail, information on wildlife and birds native to the area, as well as the physical demands of the trail. Beginning hikers should look for trails that are well marked and that are not too strenuous. In the case of long hikes, the distance between sources of drinking water should be considered to determine how much water to carry. Maps can also be printed at many websites as well as information on where to pick up a map locally.

Set Realistic Goals

Walking a few miles on a level track is much different than walking a few miles on uneven ground. Hikers should set a realistic goal for the length and difficulty of their hike. There are many trails across the country where railroad tracks have been converted into multi-use trails. These trails are virtually flat and make an easy hike for beginners. These rail trails often pass through many scenic areas including natural areas as well as historic sites.

Prepare for Problems

The amount of preparation and caution that a hiker should use depends on a number of factors including the remoteness of the hiking area and the potential hazards in the area. Hikers need to use common sense and adjust their expectations and supplies carried to meet the needs of their hiking area. The primary need for most hikers is simply water. However longer trips may require snacks, first aid kit, flashlight, rain gear, and other equipment.

Hiking is a simple outdoor recreation to enjoy. A beginning hiker can quickly gain skills and knowledge and move on to longer and more difficult hikes.
