1. Reeds- The reed is an important part for every sax player. Although it may be small in size, it's care is essential to producing a good sound. Make sure to avoid any chips or cracks in your reeds. Most music stores carry reed holders that protect you reed until you are ready to play. Also reeds require time to break in. Make sure to spend time playing on a reed at home before you use it in class or in a performance. Finally keep more than one reed in playing condition at all times. You never know when one is going to chip or break. You need to have a back up just in case.
2. Mouthpiece- The mouthpiece is another crucial part of the saxophone. Because the sax is a wind instrument, you need your mouthpiece to be in good working condition. Always keep you mouthpiece guard on your mouthpiece when you are not playing your instrument. Purchase a mouthpiece patch to avoid having teeth marks on it. Avoid any chips or cracks and if you notice any, look to replace your mouthpiece as soon as possible. A chipped mouthpiece will effect the quality of sound you get. Finally wash your mouthpiece regularly with soap and warm water.
3. Keys- Pay close attention to the keys on your horn. Never lay you sax down on it's side as this will bend or possible break your upper register keys. Most music stores have stands that are inexpensive and will correctly hold your sax for moments you are not playing. Keep the keys looking nice by regularly polishing them with a soft cotton towel. This is especially good to do before performances as your horn will shine as you play.
4. Practice and Ask questions- There is no substitute for practice. If you want to become a good sax player you have to work hard. Begin by learning all your fingerings. Then memorize important scales and patterns. Don't fall behind your class. Find an experienced player to work with you as a mentor to help develop your sound. It will not happen over night but with lots of practice you can become a good sax player.
These are just the basics. As you grown as a musician you will learn lots of other important things to help you be the best musician you can be. For the beginner, following these steps will get you well on the way to becoming a great saxophone player.
