Tips for Being a Successful Work at Home Mom

Being a stay at home mom in itself is a lot of work. However, when one adds working into the equation it can be stressful and chaotic. Working at home and having children takes organization, patience, and creative strategy.

Many moms are now opting to stay at home and work. Online and telecommuting jobs are allowing for mothers to move their offices to their homes. For most moms this is a great option. They can earn an income and still get to spend time with their children. The problem however is that when mom is at home, she is seen as being accessible to everyone. Most families do not consider mom to be working if she is present. There working at home can take some adjustment for the entire family.

I work both outside of the home and at home. I have two small children and face some of the issues listed above on a daily basis. There is a trick to getting all of your work completed, spending time with the children, accomplishing housework, and getting adequate sleep. Is it easy? No. However there are measures that can be taken to make it easier.

First, think reasonably. If you have small children, obviously you cannot expect to put in too many hours working each day. Set reasonable goals for yourself. Choose tasks that are time consuming and can be completed in small intervals. If your work requires lots of time and attention, you may want to consider getting a sitter for a few hours each week.

Know when to stop. When your children become very demanding, put your down. You cannot get anything accomplished with screaming children anyway. It can be amazing how satisfying ten or fifteen minutes with mommy can be to small children. Be certain that you balance your children's time and your personal time. Often your presence in the home makes you appear available to satisfy the needs of the family.

Keep a schedule and routine. Keep things as much as the same as you can. Once the children get into a routine things will run much more smoothly. Have breakfast, lunch, and rest time at the same time each day.

Make time for yourself. Even two and three year old children are capable of entertaining themselves for a short period of time. Each day (at the same time) set aside "mommy's work time". During this time the children are to take a nap, watch a movie, color, or look at books.

They could even build with blocks. Just have a quiet activity that the children can work on independently. If needed, set a timer and until it goes off let the children know that you are not accessible to their needs unless there is an emergency. Again set a reasonable amount of time depending on the age of your children.

Most of all remember that getting more time with your children is the entire purpose of working from home. It is not worth it if you are continuously stressed out, ill, and tired.
