Tips for Black Friday Safety

Julie Michael
There's nothing more exciting than being one of the first to get a great deal on something right before Christmas- especially if that something happens to be on your Christmas list for one of your loved ones. That's why Black Friday has become so popular. Many people begin scanning sales fliers and looking at retailer websites well in advance of Thanksgiving- there are many that begin seeking out Black Friday sales even before Halloween.

With the excitement of the great Black Friday deals and the excitement at being able to get those good deals, it's no wonder that every year, several people are injured during Black Friday events. In the hustle and bustle of the biggest shopping day of the year, people often forget to be considerate of others and often forget to be cautious themselves. This is why, when you go shopping on Black Friday this year, it's a good idea to be careful- your safety or that of others, simply isn't worth a great deal on a television or other item!

-It might be in your best interest to skip limited quantity sales. These types of Black Friday sales often have a certain item at a really low price, but in limited quantities. Many times, there are lines formed well before the store itself opens- even if the store is opening early. Even if it's an item you truly want, it's not worth getting injured because people stampede to be the first ones inside or because a fight breaks out over the last item.

-Don't travel too far out of your comfort zone simply to get that awesome Black Friday deal. Basically, if you're unfamiliar with an area or you are unsure where the retail store is located, be very cautious about traveling there just to get a good deal. If you're absolutely set upon getting that particular item from that particular retailer, take a friend or family member with you.

-Avoid confrontations with people over items on sale. This sounds like it should be a no-brainer, but I have been witness to some pretty ridiculous arguments- and even fights- over things that definitely shouldn't matter during the holiday season. Does it really matter if you're going to get that item at it's Black Friday price? Especially if it's something you were already planning to purchase anyway? Confrontations with people during Black Friday sales are usually simply verbal, but, occasionally they turn ugly- be safe by avoiding confrontation if at all possible.

-Be considerate of others. While you've been cautioned against accidental injury during Black Friday madness or a confrontation over an item that's on sale, make sure you are aware of others. If you see someone injured or needing assistance, please don't hesitate to help them and/or call for assistance.

During the madness of Black Friday, the glazed expressions at the prospect of all the great deals on some highly-requested items, there's one thing that most of us forget. It's not about the Christmas presents, it's not about the shopping, it's not about paper and ribbons and packages- Christmas is meant to be about family, love, and hope. Here's hoping we don't forget that during this Black Friday and this Holiday Season.

Good suggestions. I was wondering who'll be this year's Christmas sacrifice.
