It seems these days you have to have a knockout video in order to gain some fame. After deciding what topic or activity you want to record you must learn how to broadcast yourself in a manner that will attract people. A lot of people like going for shock value purposes and those are often heard about few days or a week later. But even the most mundane footage can be good footage. And in the end it's all about presentation and theme.
The first thing that is truly important is location. Where exactly do you want to film? I've noticed that a lot of people on Youtube usually have a general area that is used in majority of their videos. For example, their bedroom. A lot of people choose this area probably because of their comfort level.
Whether they can move around in there easily or it's because they can keep outside noise out. The best thing to do is remain stagnant throughout most of your filming process. And when I say stagnant I mean choosing to stay in your bedroom, living room, or kitchen throughout your entire filming process. Unless you are making a short movie or something that requires constant location changes.
Camera angles are actually more important than they seem. Adjusting the camera so that your face and your shoulders are in view are usually the norm for videos. This particular angle is great for speaking purposes. It allows the viewer to engage more in what you are saying. Just like in real life we keep eye contact to know that we are listening.
If you are interested in posting videos with you playing instruments, then the camera angle will most likely be different. I've noticed a lot of guitar and bass players like to film themselves from the torso and up. And try getting the guitar itself in the shot too. A lot of people like watching musicians fingers move about on the frets. A piano player might just film their hands only as they glide across the keys. It all depends on what activities you plan on filming.
If you are interested in doing things like speeches, your personality is key if you want to get your point across. I don't mean you have to act silly or rude, you just have to be able to speak well to be heard. Make sure your camera's mic is close to you so you can be heard clearly. The same goes for musicians.
If you want to play without unwanted feedback, try adjusting the sound levels on your amp or the camera itself. And try to keep out any unwanted noise if you can. I've seen people fidgeting with paper as they're talking and the sound is maxed by ten. It honestly became a distraction as I was trying to listen to them talk.
After you post your videos always make sure you have appropriate tag placements. I've come across many videos that I couldn't find simply because they lacked tags or they weren't specific enough. And make sure you are consistent with your filming and your craft. This is important because word will catch on if someone finds you interesting enough to report to others. And more importantly, don't expect to become a hit after you've posted your first video.
There have been many cases were this has happened, but you have to be realistic. Also it is important if you learn how to network. You can promote you videos in order to gain more hits. You can do this via blog or sending the footage to friends and have their friends send it to people. But in the end it's about having fun.
