Tips on Building Solar Panels with Used Parts from EBay

Building your own solar panels is not nearly as difficult as you might think, and with a little help from eBay, you can put together enough panels to power some small appliances in the space of an afternoon. While there is some technical information that you need to know, what's most important is the fact that there are slightly used solar panels readily available on the world-famous auction site for you to take advantage of. These solar panels get scratched or cracked and are considered less than 100% efficient. Despite this, they still work quite well in most cases.

Buying used solar panels in lots from eBay can save you all kinds of money as compared to solar panels fresh off the assembly line. Because they are so fragile, they are easily cracked and broken, meaning that a great deal of solar panels never even make it to the installation that they are intended for. Because of this, the used or blemished products are sold off to the highest bidder in places like eBay, flea markets and all manner of other fast and cheap market locations.

By taking the time to scout out as many sources as you can for the solar panels, it is a simple enough matter to construct them in your own homemade array in order to generate the electricity that you require. New solar panels are not cheap, but older, used solar panels can be had for a song for those who are willing to dig for what they need.

Once you have the solar panels in your possession, it is not difficult to wire them up together and attach the negative and positive leads. While this is something of an oversimplification, the truth is, it is not difficult at all to understand how to connect the solar panels together.

Anyone with some basic electrical knowledge can wire the panels together and install the resistance diode that is required in order to stop the energy from your house leaking back out into the panels once the sun goes down. Anyone with some wire cutters and a Phillips head screwdriver can very likely manage to wire up the solar panels themselves, as they are not difficult to understand.

Other skills that are required involve fabricating the tray or box for the solar panels to be attached to. A box made from wood will eventually rot in certain humid areas, such as the Southeast, so it is critical that you keep in mind what type of materials you will require. Stainless steel is the best option, but is extremely expensive. wood is obviously cheap, but will rot away. Regardless of what decision you make, make sure that you will not have to repeat the chore again and again due to a deteriorating box. Solar panels are extremely fragile and will break if handled extensively.

In all reality, the hardest part about putting all this together is obtaining the solar panels to begin with. Because they are so fragile, once you have obtained a source, make sure that they are shipped properly and are not likely to break on the way to you. If you are familiar with shipping businesses such as FedEx or UPS, you're very likely already aware that they are extremely hard on fragile products. Make sure that the solar panels are going to arrive at your house no worse off than when they leave the shipper.

Once you have assembled your solar panels, simply install them on your roof or other structure and run them directly to your inverter. If you are using a direct current system, you will not need an inverter, but if you intend to run the accessories such as lamps and televisions that run on alternating current, you'll need to install the inverter in order to transform the direct current that the solar panels provide into alternating current. This will very likely be the most expensive part of your system and is not advised that you take a chance on eBay to purchase such an expensive piece of equipment as an inverter.
