Tips to Make Your Business Thrive During the Holiday Season
Making Sure Your Business Lives Through the Holidays
If your business is located in a brick-and-mortar store, prepare for the holidays by buying the decorations as far in advance as possible (even the year before, if you find a good deal in the clearance section after last year's holiday is over.) Planning on more customers than usual? Maybe you need a little re-arrangement of your floor space. You can forego the Feng Shui temporarily if it will allow more room for customers to shop.
Also make sure you're going to have enough employees on hand to handle the increase in traffic. It doesn't just affect retail stores, either - banks, law offices and accounting firms can expect more customers as well, so you need to keep enough staff on hand to ensure business runs as smoothly as usual. This may mean you have employees standing around occasionally with nothing to do, but you'll be glad they're there during the high tides of customers.
Think about your marketing plan beforehand. Many companies (think of magazines) will have their holiday marketing plan laid out long before Christmas and New Year's ever shows their faces on the calendar. If advertisements are in your future, have the rough draft completed before publication deadlines. Ask the publications you plan to advertise in what their deadline is for holiday advertisements and write it down so you won't accidentally miss it.
If your business could be geared towards holidays other than Christmas or Hanukah, then don't limit yourself to those holidays. Although December is often considered the "holiday month", think about what other holidays your products or services could play up to. Candy and flower manufacturers will obviously have their heyday during Valentine's Day, while an Irish import store would have equally obvious connections with St. Patrick's Day. Soapmakers might look towards Mother's Day, and any company with a product line of fall seasonal items would greatly benefit from promoting them during Halloween or Thanksgiving. You may find your yearly profits skyrocket if you think about more than one holiday during the year.
Contrary to popular belief, brainstorming isn't dead. Think about various ideas you could use for your company during the holidays and write them down, no matter how off-the-wall they seem; even a crazy idea might have a solid foundation if implemented realistically. Keep all your ideas in a file or drawer, so if you come up short for an idea sometime you can always refer back to your notes when you're ready to put one into action.
Preparation also includes planning in case of an emergency. While nothing at all may happen, you can still expect the best while you prepare for the worst. If you suddenly find yourself with more customers than your employees can possibly handle, look into a temp from a staffing agency to cover the overspill. Find yourself with too much of an item? Consider having a sale on that item alone to attract customers. You need to prepare for what might happen if you have too many customers, or worse, too few customers. Preparation like this will help make sure your business is ready to whether any holiday storm.
Lastly, the best way to keep your business organized through the holidays is to make sure your personal life is just as well organized. The holiday season is stressful enough without the burden of running a business, and the resulting tension can often spill over into your relationships with friends and family members. Make time for those important in your life, even if it means letting the paperwork go for a few more hours. That way they'll be more understanding when the extra holiday bustle pulls you away, keeping your personal life well balanced with your business life.
