Tips for Buying a Betta or Japanese Fighting Fish

Shannon Frye
Fish that are known as Bettas can not live in a small fish bowl. You have to place the betta into at least a 2 1/2 gallon tank. You need to supply the fish with a oxygen and purchase a bubbler for the fish tank. You will want to perform water changes at least once every two weeks. You will want to purchase a variety of different flakes foods to feed your betta. They actually make a type of food which is known as Betta Bites.

You can never place two male bettas together in the same tank. They are named the Japanese Fighting Fish because they will fight each other to the death. The fish will peck at each other's fins until they eventually gone and the fish will bleed to death. It's horrible to see and should never happen. Make sure that you never place two of these fish together. It's cruel and wrong.

These fish cannot live at the bottom of a vase, under a plant, like you see sometimes in magazines and at the pet stores. These fish might eat some of the roots from the plant but they really need a variety of foods such as fish flakes and frozen food. This fish cannot get to top of the water to get oxygen. The fish will die sooner or later because there is no way to get oxygen into the water for the betta.

If you have the betta in a small bowl you can get away without using a filter system as long as you change the water every couple of days. A filter system will help clear up the water quality and it will provide your fish with oxygen as well. If you don't feel you need a filter system you can hook up a bubbler instead. You will still want to clean the fish tank and do a water change at least every two weeks.

Never keep a betta in a small bowl. You need to supply a betta with oxygen and purchase a bubbler. Bubblers are not very expensive and they will keep your fish alive. I would also suggest purchasing filtered water to use when you do water changes. Remember to let the water get to room temperature before you fill the fish tank up with water. You will want to make sure that you don't place the tank near any windows or heating and cooling vents.

I don't really think that they aren't allowed to be in a small bowl because my aunt keeps her's in a very small bowl. Not extremly small, but like a kinda small bowl.

This is so full of errors I don't know where to start. The title, maybe? They're SIAMESE, not Japanese, fighting fish. From Thailand. There's no such thing as a Japanese fighting fish. They don't need bubblers, they have labyrinth organs that allow them to breathe air. And they can stay long-term in a tank that's less than 2.5 gallons (ask any breeder) without ill effects, so long as the bowl is kept clean. Bettas evolved to live in stagnant puddles, not fast-flowing rivers. Bubblers make them anxious and uncomfortable, and are completely unnecessary. Please don't write articles about something that you don't know about. The internet spreads enough information as it is.
