*Research. First research how much you should expect to pay for the car you are buying. Next, research how much you should expect to get on a trade-in. Kelley Blue Book can give you a good idea of both of these things. It isn't always spot on, but it will put in the general price range of what to expect.
*Shop around. Visit a few car dealers to see what they have. You want to get the best deal. Make sure that you compare prices on similar cars.
*Don't tell the salesperson that you have a trade-in until after you have agreed on a price. If you tell the salesperson upfront about your trade-in, he or she may not negotiate as much with you.
You should be aware that the profit margin on a used car is always higher than that on a new car. Deciding to buy a lease return or some other used car with your trade-in might be a good idea. This way you will have more negotiating room with the dealership. Also, make sure that you secure any special discounts or pricing before you mention the trade-in.
Profit off of your own trade-in
Some car dealerships will buy used cars outright. If you are thinking about buying a Toyota, and you are considering trading in your Subaru, consider taking the Subaru to the Subaru dealer. You are more likely to get more for it when you sell to a dealer that sells that car than when you trade it in at a different dealership. Find out if the dealer will buy your car, and see how that stacks up to the trade in value.
Another thing you can do is sell it to a private party yourself. Usually you will get more for your car if you sell it privately. Try selling it first, then you can use the money to go toward making a bigger down payment. That can help you save money in the long run on interest charges as well.
Remember: you will only get a deal if you know your stuff. Be prepared. And also be prepared to walk away. If you think you can get a better deal somewhere else, then go somewhere else.
