The first thing you need to do before buying a couch, is to measure the area where the couch will be placed to get an idea of how big of a couch you can fit in your home. Bring the tape measure with you so you can measure the couch yourself.
If you have children, consider getting the a couch that is stain resistant and somewhat hard to damage. The retailer will offer for you to get your couch treated with another stain repellent that may even come with a warranty that will cover any stains over a period of 10 years. If they cannot get the stain out, they will replace the couch or have it reupholstered.
Think about the main way you will sit or lay on the couch and test it out accordingly. Do not be afraid to lay on a couch to test it out, because you are going to be spending at least $1000 on a new couch in most cases.
Do not let the salesman talk you into buying something that you would not have picked out yourself. Though it may sound like a great deal, if you aren't happy with it after you have it, you will most likely have to live with it anyways. Most salesmen are only thinking about what product can make them the most commission.
When deciding on a color of couch to buy, think about how the couch will be used. Do you eat in the living room, sitting on the couch? Do you drink in the living room? Do you have children? If any of these factors applies to you, you should probably go with a darker color.
Another thing to consider when buying a couch is if you have pets, is this material going to with stand having a pet climbing on it. We do not allow our dog to get on the couch, but we catch him sneaking up there every so often, and this may be the case for you as well. You don't want to put out thousands of dollars for a leather couch only to have your dog or cat put a claw into it.
What are the terms of the warranty. Most new couches come with some sort of warranty. The best warranty I know of is that of Lazyboy. Lazyboy offers a warranty for the lifetime of the couch. They guarantee all the mechanical parts for the life of the couch, which is 20 to 30 years. I'd really hate to see what the couch will look like by then, but if any of the mechanics of the couch fail, they will come and fix it for no charge. Every company has a different type of warranty that covers different things, so do not be afraid to find out every detail of it before you buy.
In closing, buying a couch is an investment that should pay you for many years. Don't make any rash decisions and shop around, you'll be glad you did!
