Tips for Buying a Dishwasher

Before buying a dishwasher, do your homework so that you are sure to select one that best suits your lifestyle. Remember, while price is important, in many instances it should not be the overriding factor when choosing a dishwasher. Here are 10 dishwasher buying tips.

1. Rack Configuration. Look for dishwasher racks with adjustable features that give you maximum versatility when loading. Also, check out how much vertical space there is to accommodate large platters and oversized dishes. One good idea is to bring some clean dishes and glassware with you when buying a dishwasher so that you can try loading them before you buy.

2. Noise. Today's dishwashers generally are very quiet, especially compared to older models, so you may be pleasantly surprised at their relative performance. Nevertheless, the quieter, the better so look for a model with plenty of insulation that will ensure minimal operational noise.

3. Energy Efficiency. When comparing dishwashers, don't overlook energy usage. You may want to opt for an energy-efficient ENERGY STAR-rated dishwasher, which will be both energy-efficient and water efficient . A "green" dishwasher will save you money on utility bills over the long run, as well as giving you the satisfaction of doing your part to save the planet.

4. Hard-Food Disposal. Not all dishwashers have this feature, and whether you want it comes down to personal preference. Buying a dishwasher with a hard-food disposal built in means you can skip pre-rinsing, which will save you time and water.

5. Cycle Settings. Don't pay for multiple cycle options that you'll never use. Be sure that you understand the cycle options on each dishwasher that you seriously evaluate and consider how likely you are to use them. You may pay more for a dishwasher that can do more, but if you don't take advantage of its features, you are wasting your money.

6. Size. It goes without saying that there's no point falling in love with a dishwasher that won't fit in your kitchen, so measure the space you have for a dishwasher before you start shopping.

7. Capacity. Choose a dishwasher that meets your capacity needs. If you have a large family, you may need a dishwasher with more than average capacity, while if you live alone in a small apartment, a compact model may save you money and space.

8. Hidden Controls. Some dishwashers have control panels that are hidden when the door is closed. The advantage of hidden control panels include a sleeker appearance, less chance of accidentally pushing the buttons and starting or disrupting a dishwashing cycle, and less risk that children will play with the controls.

9. Price. Compare prices on comparable dishwashers that have the features you want. If you want an old dishwasher removed and hauled away and the new dishwasher installed, be sure that the prices include these services. Also, take into account intangibles like warranties.

10. Appearance. While performance is more importance than appearance when choosing a dishwasher, appearance is a consideration, especially when comparing dishwashers with similar features and prices. You'll be living with your new dishwasher for a long time, so be sure that its style and color are a good fit with your kitchen décor.
