It can sometimes be difficult for a newcomer to select the right model train. One trip to the hobby store, and you may leave a little confused and unsure of what you want. There are a few things you should know before buying your first model train. Here are a few tips to get you started, and on your way to years of enjoying model railroading.

You will want to consider the amount of space you have available. Each model train has a scale. This scale lets you know the size of the train. The most popular scale is the HO scale. It is nicely detailed, and only uses a limited amount of space. For a small space, consider the N scale trains. O scale, or O gauge trains, are for large spaces. For example, the minimum space needed for an O scale setup is a 6 foot by 6 foot area.

In most cases you will want your model train to be DCC enabled. This allow you to easily run multiple trains at the same time. It is always a good idea to go ahead and purchase DCC enabled trains. You may think at first you only want one train, but model-railroading is a fun and addicting hobby. So, it's a good idea to go ahead and plan upfront for multiple trains.

You can purchase your railroading set several ways. There are ready to go kits available that will have your new model trains going in no time. You can also add pieces to these sets later on, as well as, other trains. You want to make sure you purchase extra trains in the same scale as the kit.

Another way to set up your new railroad is piece by piece. This is just as it sounds. Each piece is hand selected and set up individually. This requires a bit more time, but is a great way to get involved in every little detail of your new model train hobby.

Finally, drop by your local hobby store and talk to an associate there. Most stores have at least one staff member who is knowledgeable about model railroading. Ask questions, and familiarize yourself with what is available.

Besides your local hobby store, consider looking on the internet for a wider selection of model trains. Most hobby stores are fairly small, and simply do not stock a complete selection of what is available. A quick search online, and you will be in what one might call "model train heaven".
