Tips for Buying a Motorcycle Helmet

Roger C.
For some people buying a helmet is not really a big deal. They would walk into the accessories store, take a quick glance at the helmets, maybe ask the store employee for assistance, and buy a helmet that looks cool and is not that expensive. This is how many people choose their helmets, but is not particularly the best way to do so. A helmet is not just another piece of adornment; it is a crucial component to your safety well, it the most crucial component for this. Buying the right helmet for you can be time consuming and is not easy, so there are several things you need to remember.

Maybe you don't think a helmet is that important for your safety, but it is. You don't need to believe me, believe the statistics. Bikers wearing a helmet tend to crash less often and their survival rate is far more superior. This makes sense, our head although is pretty hard, is the place where we can suffer severe injuries such as brain damage or death, so it is crucial to protect it.

In order to buy a good helmet it is important that you are comfortable in it and it is a tight fit in your head; not asphyxiating-tight, but it must be firm. If you are confused about buying a new helmet keep in mind that helmets that meet the US Department of Transportation standards offer more protection than those who don't.

Helmets approved by these standards are subject to impact tests and are required to absorb a determined amount of the impact received to protect the rider. They are also required to have a fastening system that prevents your helmet to fly off in a crash and also require providing protection against penetration.

Certified DOT helmets are far more secure than those who aren't even if you compare a cheap DOT helmet against an expensive DOT helmet. Another factor to consider is the use you are going to give to your helmet. Helmets are designed different for dirt bikes, road bikes or sport bikes, so depending on your use you should choose accordingly. I personally prefer closed helmets which offer protection for your eyes. When riding at high speeds you can get debris and bugs into your eyes and that is a very dangerous situation, so avoid it by using a closed helmet. It will also give you more protection in case of an accident.
