First things first, you should consider how you plan to use the basket. Are you going to use it mostly for romantic picnics with just two of you? Or are you going to be crating gear to feed a family? Do you plan to use it only at the park or in town, or do you see yourself taking it with you on hikes into nature?
Knowing the answers to these questions up front can give you more direction when deciding which type of picnic basket is going to work best.
There are two main types of picnic baskets on the market - traditional picnic baskets and tote style baskets.
Traditional baskets are the ones that probably come to mind when you think of a picnic basket. They are often woven out of wicker or another natural material and the inside is usually lined with fabric. They have two sturdy handles that allow you to carry the food that you have stacked inside.
Tote style baskets are a lot more like a backpack than a basket. These newer models have straps that allow you to sling them over your shoulder or on your back for easy carrying. They also often come with holsters designed to hold beverages so you can take your drinks with you easily. Typically these tote style baskets offer a lot more padding than traditional baskets which can help to protect your food and keep it safe while you transport it.
You can also find picnic baskets that are insulated to help keep your food cold. Similar to a cooler, these baskets are great if you are leaving early in the morning and don't plan to eat until later in the day. Nothing can ruin a picnic faster than spoiled potato salad!
For the most part, traditional picnic baskets work best if you plan to stick close to your car and don't need to carry the food very far. Tote baskets are a better option if you plan to go longer distances or to leave the food in the basket for awhile before you eat it.
You should also look at the accessories that come with each basket, too. Many come with utensils, a blanket, napkins and other accessories that can make packing up for a picnic a breeze.
By knowing your needs in advance and thinking through how you plan to use your picnic basket you can be sure that whatever basket you get will serve you well and make your picnics great!
