Tips on Buying a New Refrigerator

Kathy OGorman
Refrigerators tend to last for many years. In fact, my mother-in-law has one from the 1950's that still runs. She says she will replace it when it stops working, but that may not be the smartest approach. New energy regulations make today's refrigerator models much more cost efficient than the ones in times past, so replacing your old refrigerator can save you money on your energy bill, costing less in the long run.

There are basically three main types of refrigerators: top mount freezer, bottom mount freezer, and the side-by-side. These are the most commonly purchased types, although one of the new trends is refrigerator drawers built into the cabinetry. Top mount refrigerators are an old favorite that continues to be the main style purchased today. These refrigerators feature a freezer compartment on the top of the refrigerator. This gives top-mounts easy access to the freezer compartment, a large storage capacity, and generally a lower cost of the three types. One drawback to this style of refrigerator, however, is that bending is necessary to reach the bottom shelves and drawers. These refrigerators tend to have the largest storing capacity both in the shelves and in the door.

Bottom mount refrigerators have the freezer on the bottom, which is accessed with either a door or a slide out drawer. There refrigerators have the advantage of keeping commonly used foods at eye level, with no bending required. One does have to bend to reach the freezer compartment, but this is done less often than getting things from the refrigerator, making bottom-mounts a popular choice.

Side-by-side models have the refrigerator on one side and the freezer on the other with double doors. Many have ice and water dispensers on the outside of the door, and these are particularly useful if you have children. The ice and water are filtered. One drawback to this style is that there is generally less storage space in a side-by-side than a top or bottom mount model. Although both sides are easy to access, larger items may not fit, such as trying to freeze your Thanksgiving turkey.

Choosing a model is a matter of personal choice, but there are some things to look for when choosing. Look for the energy star label. This means the refrigerator has better efficiency than is required by the government. Each refrigerator is required to have a yellow energy label on the door. Compare these to see which refrigerator will cost less to run. A lower number means more efficiency. Listen to the models running, and look for a quiet refrigerator. Decide on the exterior finish. Stainless is the most popular choice now. There are also finishes that have a textured appearance and don't show fingerprints like models in years past.

After you buy your new refrigerator, there are some steps you can take to maintain it. Check the seal around the door periodically. If you see any tears in it, replace it. This will prevent your refrigerator from overworking. Use a small amount of WD-40 or petroleum jelly on the door hinges. Vacuum your condenser coils every six months. Sometimes these are located underneath the refrigerator and accessed by removing a grille. They may also be at the back of your refrigerator. Keeping these clean will make your refrigerator's work easier, and maintain energy efficiency.
