First, you much take note of your dogs' sleeping style. Does your dog like a small well-padded area to sleep? If this were the case, he would need a nesting bed where he can fluff to his heart's desire. Does he turn round and round and fluff his area before getting it just right and laying down? He will need a bed with sides so he can get comfortable without falling off the bed. Is he more of the sprawling type that just wants as much room as possible? This dog needs a lot of room to stretch out. A sofa bed or chaise lounge may be the right choice. This is where your decor comes into play.
Secondly, the climate and type of dog you have will be major considerations. If your dog is a small dog without much hair to keep it warm, you will want to get a small bed to match the size of the dog so it can curl up against the side and retain its body temperature. On the other had if it is the summer months or you live in a warm climate you may want to consider the thermoregulation bed or mat. Even the dog hammock or poly resin bed for airflow might make your pet happy. In the colder months, you may want to get a kennel with memory foam to keep your pet warm or a kennel mat or heated bed.
Thirdly, keep in mind the size of your dog. Is it full-grown yet and how big will it get. The larger breeds have fewer choices, but they are out there. Custom beds are available from many merchants. Do not forget that orthopedic beds are available for your older dogs with health problems.
Fourth, you want to shop for practicality. You will want to pay particular attention to a washable alternative. Are there covers that can be changed and washed or is the entire bed washable? Several beds come with different color covers and pads.
Next, you will want to pay attention to durability. This is more important when it comes to the larger breeds and to the dogs that stay outside year round. You do not want a bed that will rust in bad weather and if your dog chews, make sure your bed is durable and chew-proof.
Dog beds can always be custom-built to your particular size and needs. This option is more costly, but having a large dog is naturally going to have higher costs involved. The main thing to remember is that you dog is comfortable and the bed you choose is durable and fits the needs of your dog.
