Tips on Caring for a Baby Ferret

If you decided to raise a baby ferret you will have a beautiful pet. You will have to work harder in caring for a baby ferret than with an adult ferret. Your new baby ferret will probably be use to a certain routine if you buy the ferret from someone as a newborn, so it would be wise to get advice from the person that you purchased the ferret from. You will have to learn how to care for the ferret yourself if it's the baby of your adult ferret.

Kits are also a name that baby ferrets are known by. You must be aware that your baby ferret will be born without the ability to hear. Until your newborn ferret reaches at least three weeks old, his or her eyes will remain close. It is around this time that they will also start walking. Most people usually start to feed their ferrets when they turn five or six weeks in age.

A lot of baby ferrets have the ability to care for themselves but will still require some assistance from you.

When your ferret is very young, you should avoid contact with it unless it's absolutely necessary that you do so. There really shouldn't be any reason that you would have to handle the baby ferret or the mother. You should have already provided everything that the mother will need far in advance of the actual birth. Make sure to leave water and something for them to eat.

A ferret can have up to eight children at a time. Even though it will be hard to not to want to hold the newborn ferret it is important that you resist the temptation. If there is too much help from people it can cause the mother ferret to not take proper care of her baby.

How fast your baby ferret grows to adult size will amaze you. In four to five months the babies will already be the size of grown ferrets.

Make sure that you take your newborn ferret for its vaccination shot before they turn seven weeks. If you plan to get your ferrets neutered this would also be the perfect time.

When your baby ferret gets to the point where it no longer needs its mother's milk you start feeding the ferret the same foods as its mother.

Since young ferrets grow so fast they will need a lot of food. It is best to feed your newborn lots of fats and protein. A lot of people feed their ferrets cat food, but it is best to find proper ferret food for them to eat. You should only use cat food if you are not able to find adequate food for the ferret.

You will achieve great delight in raising your baby ferret. Your baby will become an adult before you realize it, so have lots of fun with it while you can.
