Tips for Caring for Your Child in College
A Few Tips for Parents and How They Can Stay Connected Even when Far Away
1. Be responsive to your child's basic material needs.
If your child has obvious material needs, such as money for basic, on-campus dining, medicine, or anything else that is of true need, provide for them. The traditional American college student is known to be poor, so if your child is in need of something crucial, then make room in your budget for it. Now, this doesn't give your student the right to go out and demand a brand new vehicle, but providing basic needs for your child will undoubtedly strengthen your relationship.
2. Surprise your child with gifts from home: the more personal, the better.
As a college student myself, I find that there are many times when I simply miss home. However, every now and then, I will receive a letter or a small care package from home. This definitely lights up my day and can really help put perspective on any feelings of homesickness. Especially for first year students, it can be tough adjusting to college life. In fact, it is not uncommon for many first year students end up dropping out because they miss home so much.
If you get the chance, put together a small care package or write a heartfelt card to your child. From a college student's standpoint, it is a great feeling to know that people at home are still caring for you, even when you are away.
3. Call your child every now and then.
College can often turn into a stressful and overwhelming time for most students, but most students enjoy talking with parents, friends, and brothers/sisters whenever they get a free moment. However, that doesn't stop you from calling them up now and then and initiating the action. Now, don't bug your child, but a nice check up is perfect, especially if you feel you've fallen out of touch with your child. Another idea is to get a webcam, so you can actually see your child live over the Internet.
All in all, it is not too difficult to keep in touch with a college student: you just need to know the right tips! I hope that this post can encourage you to get better connected with your child at college.
