Tips for Caring for Your Favorite Lingerie

Linda M. McCloud
Lingerie can make a woman feel sexy and special. Lingerie can also turn our men's head. But lingerie can be expensive. For this reason, when we do splurge and find a special piece or two that we love, we need to know the tips on how to take care of it properly.

Tip number one:

Check the label.

Lingerie is like any other type of clothing; they have special tags in the back or on the side telling you the appropriate way to wash it. These labels are there for a few reasons such as informing us of the t yep of material used in creating the piece and the washign and tips for it.

Another tip that is recommended when reading the label is to pay attention to the type of material used in making the lingerie. Each type of material may require special care. For instance:

Rayon is known for shrinking.
Nightgowns and robes made from viscose will look better, if dry-cleaned.

Consider washing most everything else, including your lace pieces by hand.

Yes, many stores sell lingerie bags that are suppose to make it easier to wash these pieces via your washing machine. Yet, they offer little protection from damage to these delicate pieces.

Tip number two:

The best way to wash your lingerie by hand is to first fill up the sink with cold water. Now add two capful of a mild, eco-friendly detergent. This kind of detergent is much more milder on delicate pieces than other types of detergents are.

If any of the pieces are stained, pretreat these stains first by dabbing a little bit of the detergent on the stain itself.

The best way to wash the garments is to swish them around in the water, mimicking the action of a washing machine. After a few minutes, rinse each piece carefully and gently by wringing out any excess water.

Now lay each piece flat on a towel to dry.

Never dry your lingerie in the dryer. It can burn the elastic and best up the way it fits.

Tip number three:

Remember the golden rule about not mixing and matching colors. This applies to hand washing as well as machine washing.

Keep whites and colors separately.

Also be careful of garments that state on the label that they were hand-dyed or pigment dyed. These pieces can fade and ruin any other pieces washed with them. For this reason, wash these garments alone and then fix fresh water to wash any other pieces.

Tip number four

If you wish you can steam silk camisoles and robes. To do this, turn the garment inside out and hold the steamer head a couple inches away from the garment. Watch that no water splatters onto the garment. Any water that splatters could leave a mark.

If you don't want to go to that much bother, you can also hang the garment in the bathroom and then allow the hot shower to run for a while on full blast (or take a hot shower yourself).

Tip number five

You can roll your underwear, soft bras and your slips to keep them from creasing. This method also makes your drawers looks more put together.

Padded bras or bras that contain underwire should be folded in half, allowing the straps to be tucked under the cups.

Many women also like to add little sachets to their underwear drawer to keep everything smelling fresh.

Tip number six

Don't forget to wash your stockings and hose by hand, too. Hand these to dry and then roll them in neat rows as well, in your drawers for safe keeping.

By taking the extra time and attention to detail, as you are caring for your favorite lingerie, you will find that they can last longer and you can save money (since you won't need to replace it as often).

These are great tips, ones I was fortunate enough to learn from my mother who always handwashed her lingerie--all of it, including bras--in the sink in cold water and Woolite.
