To fix this problem simply replace the fuel filter. To replace the fuel filter you have to undo the hose clamps around it. Make sure you have clamped the ends of the fuel line so it will not leak gas. When you have removed the filter replace it with a clean one retightening the hose clamps that hold it together. Also make sure the clamps are actually clamping down on the actual fuel filter, If they are not it will leak gasoline. Also be sure that the fuel filter is facing the correct direction.
Usually there is an arrow on the outside of the fuel filter that indicates witch way the fuel filter should be pointed. The arrow indicates the direction the gas flows so make sure the fuel filter is attached to the lines so the arrow flows toward the input on the engine, this would usually be the carburetor. The carburetor will not exist on your car if it is fuel injected so do not be upset if you cannot find it. If that was the problem the car should run fine. If the car returns to the state it was in before soon after you fixed the problem. You should check the filter again. If it is dirty again, you could have a problem with the gas you are putting in it being dirty. You may want to purchase your gasoline at a different gas station if possible.
It could also mean that you have a dirty gas tank. To fix this problem, you can either keep changing your fuel filter and hope that it cures itself or remove your gas tank and clean it, or replace it. Also some fuel filters are more complex then others. This advice is mostly for older cars.
Other fuel problems can be from lose connections or cracking fuel line. To fix these problems simply tighten the connections, or replace line with new fuel line. Be careful when you are working on these problems. If you get gasoline in your eyes, you must flush it out right away. Open wounds can also be susceptible to gasoline burns. Make sure you wash it off with soap and water. Also make sure you wash your arms and face after fixing the gasoline problem.
