Tips for Children's Dental Health

Dental health starts with good eating habits. It may not necessarily need avoiding sweets like candy cone, chocolate candy, hard candy or candy bar. The clue is to get the balance in a right way. When you are choosing foods for your children, you can consider candy as a part of the diet, and teach them how to maintain healthy teeth.

The caring routine for teeth needs your kids to brush their teeth at least twice daily, irrespective of whether they eat candy or other types of foodstuff in a day. A cane candy is not a teeth cleaning tool, as many children tend to believe. Anybody who consumes foods with high sugar content needs to brush his or her teeth twice daily.

Consumption of sweet candy may lead to tooth decay. It is advisable to use fluoride toothpastes for slightly older children. Make sure children form a routine for brushing teeth. Limit hard candy and candy bar consumption during the day. Prevent their consumption totally after brushing teeth at bedtime. This is to avoid microorganisms and bacteria working on their teeth during night.

The ADA (American Dental Association) provides games and animations online to teach children the fundamentals of dental health and how to brush. They teach kids about the damage that can be caused by consuming candy cane, chocolate candy, hard candy, sweet candy and candy bar, if regular brushing of teeth is not practiced.

A good idea to encourage children's dental hygiene is to provide them with flavored toothpaste that is also fluoride-based. This may make their brushing an enjoyable experience. Many dentists recommend that you change the appearance and taste of toothpaste at regular intervals to realize better results.

Studies have found that those kids who like brushing two times a day, tend to do it for more number of times if the toothpaste has been flavored because they tend to associate the flavor with sweet candy. Brushing prevents cavities, gum disease and other dental issues that may be caused by consuming chewable hard candy or candy bars.

Children aged six or less need only use a pea-sized blob of toothpaste to help remove plaque. This is enough to have fluoride protection against candy cane, chocolate candy and other regular food items that get stuck to teeth all through the day.

Healthy teeth come from healthy eating habits. The snacks that children eat are usually made from sweet candy, and the more they consume these, they are at more risk of getting cavities. But limiting your kid's snack consumption may not be advisable as they need food to produce energy. You can substitute candies with other nutritious foods like vegetable sticks, which is a good idea.
