Young tweens may be a little reluctant to leave mom and dad overnight to be with a bunch of strangers. Older tweens cannot wait to leave home even if it is only for a week. As a parent, you will need to decide if your tween will enjoy an overnight camp or if your tween would like a day camp. Day camps are just as much fun without the extra cost or stress of an overnight adventure. Parents also need to decide if they can handle their little babies being gone for a full week.
What are your child's interest? If you are going to send your tween to summer camp, you want them to enjoy themselves. If your child enjoys a specific sport, they are more likely to enjoy a camp for that sport than they would if you sent them to a reading camp.
Does your tween need practice in a certain area? Sending your child to a specialized general camp for sports or a specific type camp such as soccer will help your child improve in those areas or in a particular area. Your child could gain knowledge or practice that he or she has not been offered in their day to day life. If your child is interested in a certain sport, he or she will be more likely to enjoy a camp regarding their area of curiosity.
Where is the camp located? When choosing a camp for your tween, distance may become a factor. If the camp is a daily camp, you will need to be able to get your tween to camp on time every day. How far away is the camp? If the camp is a week long camp the tween will stay at overnight, you may not need to worry about distance. If you think your tween is going to be miserable and will want you to pick him or her up, then you should think about a camp that is closer to home.
Who are the counselors or the people watching your child? Every parent wonders who will be in charge of their child at camp. Will the help be teenagers or is there adult staff nearby? Parents may want to consider the help before sending their tween to an unknown camp.
Consider your tween's feelings about camp. Ask your tween if they want to go to camp and what type of camp they would be interested in. Your tween may not want to go to camp and you will have wasted your money. If your tween wants to go to a specific type of camp, their input will help you choose a camp that they would enjoy. With these tips you will find the best summer camp for your tween that everyone will enjoy.
