There's no doubt about it - credit counseling can help you more effectively manage your debt. In fact, if you're like millions of other people, you are probably in a world of debt and consistently ask yourself, how credit counseling can be advantageous to you. Well, the good news is that credit debt counseling services have helped numerous people around the globe get in control of their financial situation and squash debt for good. In this article, we'll discuss some proven tips for choosing a credit debt counseling service. Are you ready? Let's begin.

Be aware. Although there are dozens of credit debt counseling services to choose from (especially within larger cities), you still have to be careful when choosing a debt counseling service to help you. In fact, choosing the very first non reputable agency could make you suffer big time. Deceptive credit counseling services can not only steal your hard earned money but they could destroy your reputation and make your credit report worse. In fact, some of them have been known to steal their customer's fees and not apply it to their delinquent accounts and to even share your personal information with other businesses, including your social security number. Therefore, you must be extra careful when choosing a credit debt counseling service.

Know the signs. There are three signs to determine if a credit counseling service is legit. The first sign is longevity, your credit counseling agency should be in business for at least five years, if not you should move on to the next agency. Businesses, when they first start-up will often struggle to make a name for themselves. However those that have been in business for over 5 years or more have likely gone through their growing plans and are more established. The second sign the accreditation, if the agency lack accreditation it's not even worth it to waste your time. In fact, the credit counseling service should be able to prove that they have been accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA) or the International Standards Organization and that this accreditation is in good standing. Lastly, the counseling service agency should have good references from actual clients they've successfully helped.

Contact your state's general office. Once you find a suitable company, double check with your state's general office. You can also contact he Better Business Bureau. By contacting these agencies, you can find out whether or not these credit card agencies have been engaged in shady dealings. After all, you want to get the debt off of your back but you don't want to get scammed while in the process.

In conclusion, being in debt is not fun for anyone, but pursing a shady credit counseling service will make the situation you're in even worse. Therefore, when choosing a credit counseling service always do your research and make sure that the chosen agency has no complaints with your state's general office, the Better Business Bureau and that they meet the three criteria for legitimacy (longevity, sound reputation and references).
