Tips for Choosing a Guest Book Attendant for Your Wedding

Kristi Patrice Carter
After choosing your bridesmaids and groomsmen you may think that you are done delegating the important tasks for your wedding. Before you relax, however, take a moment to think about your wedding guest book. This small piece of the wedding puzzle will become a treasured possession as it will help you remember the guests who celebrated with you. Have a close and reliable friend handle the wedding book so that it is taken good care of and so that your guests actually sign it.

Select your bridesmaids and groomsmen. The first decision you need to make is who you want to have as your bridesmaids and groomsmen. As the most important job you can ask a friend to do for you, your closest friends and relatives would be the candidates for this job. Go ahead and ask them to take the position and make sure they can and want to do it.

Narrow down your list of close friends and family. Once you know who your main attendants will be, you can look at your remaining close friends and family to decide who you should ask to be your guest book attendant.

Think about personalities. Before you simply ask someone to be your wedding guest book attendant, think about their personality and their reliability. You want someone who will draw people to the guest book, encourage people to sign it, and represent you well as a well-behaved friend and guest.

Invite your selections to be your guest book attendants. Call the people you have in mind for the job. Make sure they will be able to come to your wedding prior to the ceremony time, and make sure they are excited about the position.

Tell your guest book attendant your expectations. Make sure the guest book attendant knows what they should be doing and what they should wear. Give them specific instructions if this is their first wedding. For instance, you should inform them if you would like them to check off names when guests arrive, if you would like them to obtain signatures immediately before the wedding, monitor the guest table, etc.

Designate your wedding book attendant as someone special. Ask your wedding book attendant to wear your wedding colors, a dress similar to the bridesmaids' dresses or groomsmen's tux. Another option would be to present them with a boutonniere/corsage and write their name in the program as a special attendant.

Think outside the box. If you can't get excited about a traditional guest book, have your guest book attendant be creative. If it fits your personality, have the guest book attendant create a photographic guest book or use a video camera to allow people to state their attendance and give you words of wisdom.
