Tips on Choosing Healthy Fast Foods

Virginia Gaces
We are aware that most fast foods are rich in Trans fats and high in calories, but sometimes, in inevitable circumstances, we do not have any option but to eat in a fast food restaurant.

Selecting food from a fast food menu with the least calories and less fat is a challenge. There are however, several foods that can be considered as good food too.

There is a law in several states (like New York) that requires fast food chains to label their products with regards to the content, most especially, the amount of Trans fats present in the food. This would make it easier for you to select.

Here are some fast food dish that could be less in fat and calories:

Salads

Go for the veggies, but avoid creamy salad dressings. Opt for vinegar instead.

Mayonnaise and the like are a big no-no. Mayonnaise is rich in bad fats.

Fish

Some fast food chains have fish in their menu. Choose the dish that has been cooked with lesser fat, like broiled fish.

Tea

Tea is a healthy drink, just avoid the sugar. Dilute the drink with water or more ice to lessen your intake of the sugar content.

Fruit juice

This is a health drink too. Don't go for the shakes. Avoid those with milk and sugar. If it is prepared already, then add more ice to dilute the sugar content, or better still, drink water instead.

Rice is a good alternative for fries. Rice has no fat content, only carbohydrate; while fries have lots of fat and salt in it.

Fresh Fruit

At times, fresh fruit maybe available in a fast food menu.

This is because fast food chains are now trying to incorporate the:"good healthy food" into their menu because of public outcry and promulgated laws which they have to comply to.

If you choose for this option, do not eat the skin of the fruit. Even the skin of fruits may contain a coloring agent called tartrazine which may cause allergic asthma and exacerbate respiratory illnesses.

Peel the fruit carefully and eat only the flesh.

Food/meat that has the least amount of trans fats

Read the labels. You are entitled to know the components of your food. Choose something that has less Trans fats in it. Trans fats could serve as culprits to your dieting and weight reducing program.

If you have to eat meat, do not eat the skin. The skin is rich with bad fats (High Density Lipoprotein). Bad fats increase the risk of coronary and cardiovascular conditions.

For chicken meat, avoid the wings and legs portions. They have more fat than the other slices.

Lean meat is a source of good protein. Be wise to eat only the protein content of meat and not the fat.

Avoid also those with lots milk and sugar in them, like shakes and ice creams.

You could eat a healthy meal in a fast food restaurant as long as you are aware of selecting the right food to eat; so do not despair, when time is of the essence and you do not have any options, run to your nearest fast food chain and eat healthy!
