Tips for Choosing Hiking Boots

Whether you hike in the mountains, in the desert or in the woods, the most important piece of equipment that you will use for hiking is your hiking boots. When you are hiking, need to be sure that your feet are properly outfitted both for comfort and for safety. Hiking boots should help to keep your feet protected, comfortable and dry no matter what conditions you encounter along the way.

Choosing the right type of hiking boots for the terrain where you will be hiking is vital. The last thing that you want when you are out backpacking in the middle of nowhere is to have foot trouble. After all, you have to hike back out again and if you feet are sore, wet or uncomfortable it could be a miserable trip.

The type of hiking boots that you choose should be appropriate for the terrain where you will be hiking. Some trails may be rocky and mountainous, while others may require that you cross creeks or bogs where your feet could get wet. Before you head out on your trip shop around and make sure you have the right kind of boots for your journey.

There are three basic styles of hiking boots - trail boots, mid-weight boots, and heavy duty mountaineering boots.

Trail boots are lightweight hiking boots that are appropriate for flat, easy terrain. These boots are best if you just hike occasionally and stick mainly to well traveled trails and paths or just like to take casual walks in the woods. There hiking boots are actually more like sneakers in that they are comfortable and flexible, but don't offer much in the way of ankle support. These lighter boots are usually made with nylon or very light leather which makes them more soft and flexible than other kinds of hiking boots.

The second type of hiking boot is the mid-weight boot. Mid-weight boots are great for longer hikes that may have rocky, rough or muddy terrain. These hiking boots aren't designed to take on extremely tough terrain, but they will help to protect your feet on weekend backpacking trips or day hikes in rockier, rougher areas. Mid-weight boots usually are made of sturdy, tough materials like hard leather and have a thicker sole that is less flexible than soles of trail boots. A mid-weight boot will provide you with more support for your ankle which is great for longer, more intense hiking.

Mountaineering boots or heavy boots are the heavy-weights of hiking boots and are designed for rough terrain and cross country hiking. These boots often come with a reinforced toe plate for extra protection for your feet and are sturdier and tougher than mid-weight boots. If you do a lot of heavy hiking or plan to take a long hiking trip that will have you away from home for an extended period, heavy boots are probably the right choice in hiking boots for you. These boots provide extra ankle support as well, which is important for long hikes.

No matter which style of hiking boot you choose, be sure that it is appropriate for the type of hiking that you want to do. If you have any doubts about which style of hiking boot is best for you, talk to a salesman or professional at your local hiking or camping store. If you tell them how you plan to use the boot they should be able to find a boot that will work well for your needs. If the boots you choose are not already waterproofed, be sure to find out if they can be safely waterproofed using a spray or waterproofing agent. There is nothing worse than damp, wet feet to ruin a perfectly good day of hiking.

The right hiking boots can make hiking a joy! Be sure to choose your boots with care and find the most appropriate hiking boots for your situation.
