Signing up for a martial art is a great way to stay in shape, learn to defend oneself, and gain self confidence. Most of the time those are some of the main reasons people decide to sign up for a martial art. However choosing a martial art is a little more complicated. Several things need to be taken into consideration when deciding which martial art to study. Picking a school with a good reputation is also essential as learning from a bad instructor will certainly not be beneficial and may even cause unneeded injuries and so on. In this article I will provide some helpful information for those who are considering signing up for a martial art.

The first thing that has to be decided is the martial art, the best way to do this is by researching the styles that sound the most appealing. The choices are numerous so picking one that will suit the student can be a bit difficult. Because of this I will give a brief summary of the more popular martial arts and what they are about.

First up is Karate, this martial art is a solid choice as it is hugely popular and so finding a decent school would not require much effort. This Japanese martial art mainly consists of using one's hands and also the feet for defensive and offensive moves. The martial art numerous styles so make sure to choose the one you think will be the best for your needs.

Next I would like to talk about Kung Fu, like Karate this martial art is also very popular as well as effective when it comes to self defense. Its origins lie in ancient China so of course the moves are different from those of Karate but are as equally deadly. This martial art also has various styles so again I encourage some research on each one to find something that you like.

Another great choice which is also extremely popular is Taekwondo; this Korean martial art has gained popularity due to its impressive effectiveness in combat and self defense. It has even reached the status of an Olympic sport so again it is also an excellent choice. The martial art mainly emphasizes the use of the legs by learning various types of kicks and also a few moves which include using the hands.

There are also a few other choices which should not be overlooked as they are no less effective but do not seem to be as popular. They include Mixed Martial Arts (which seems to be rapidly gaining popularity through the emergence of the gladiator style MMA fights), Jujitsu which is Japanese, Ninjutsu which is the art of the ancient Ninja of Japan, and also Russian Sambo.

Whatever martial art you choose will be a good choice as there is no such thing as one martial art being superior to another, it all comes down to the skill of the fighter in the end. The choice should be based on personal preference first of all so the student will enjoy learning.

When it comes to finding a good school that teaches the martial art you want to study there are several things to consider. First make sure the school is credible and has instructors that are the real thing and not amateurs as paying to learn something useless is obviously not worth it. Second try and find some reviews online about the school or speak to people that are signed up to get an idea what it is like. Last before signing up make sure to go to the school and and watch a class and maybe speak to the instructors as to see if the school will be right for you.
