Tips on Claiming a Lottery Jackpot

Lotteries are played all over the world by millions and millions of people. The government even took notice of people's fascination with winning a large sum of money and started government regulated lotteries. The most common large jackpot lotteries in the United States are Megamillions and Powerball. These lottery games offer large jackpots in a marketing effort to entice people to buy a ticket or tickets for a shot at winning a lot of money by picking 6 correct numbers.

There have been numerous jackpot winners over the past decade and most of the people that have won were not wealthy by most definitions. Lottery winner's lives change the moment they cash in their ticket. All of sudden they'll have the media outlets requesting an interview, friends and family they never talk to showing up and the scores of other people down on their luck wanting some help.

Winning a large sum of money on a lottery jackpot takes a lot of will power in making sure that the money is not squandered by giving to every organization or person holding their hand out. There are numerous stories of poor people winning the lottery and going broke within a few years because of all the giving or poor handling of their financial affairs.

Most lottery jackpot winner interviews you hear the person stating that they're going to buy a new house, car, trips, etc... That's okay, if done in moderation and making sure their affairs are in order. The problem occurs when a lottery winner is constantly harassed by family, friends and strangers. Lottery winners want to help their families out, but how much is enough? You can read news stories every year about the turmoil that is occurring in a past lottery winner's life.

One thing that Megamillions and Powerball lottery organizations should do is to allow all winners's to remain anonymous so that they can avoid the spotlight. Some states have the options of claiming a lottery jackpot as anonymous. Lottery winners should setup a blind trust or some other sort of trust to claim their winnings. However, the drawback would be that the lottery winner's family members would find out about it and it would spread throughout the community.

If you ever win a lottery jackpot the best thing to do before claiming the prize would be to hire an attorney. Setup a trust to claim the prize and the hardest part of winning a lottery jackpot is to make a decision on moving out of the state that you live in or at least out of the immediate neighborhood you live at.
