Tips on How to Clean Marble Floors

I happen to believe that marble is just about the most beautiful stone to use for flooring. It is elegant as well as natural looking, and it goes well with just about any style of furnishings. The problem with marble floors comes from the fact that marble has a soft surface, and great care must be used in its cleaning and maintenance.

These tips will help you in cleaning and maintaining your marble floor.

1. Do not use abrasives

As I mentioned earlier, marble has a soft surface, and will scratch easily. Abrasive cleaners such as Comet or Ajax will scratch the surface, ruining the appearance of that piece of marble.

2. Do not use vinegar

Vinegar is an acid, and will etch the surface of marble. The surface will be just as bad as if you had used an abrasive cleaner.

3. For food stains

I have found that dipping the end of a soft cloth in a little over the counter peroxide will remove most, if not all of a food or juice stain. Depending on how bad the food or juice stain is, you might have to do quite a bit of rubbing, but the results will be well worth it in the long run.

4. For general cleaning of your marble floor

If you want to mop your tile floor on a daily or semi-daily basis, it is best just to use lukewarm water; and by lukewarm, I mean tepid. You don't want it hot, and of course you don't want it cold.

Get your cleaning cloth wet from your bucket of water, and wring out excess water. Clean a relatively small area of your marble floor, and immediately wipe dry with another soft cloth. Continue on to the next section of floor until the entire floor is done. If it is necessary that you use a detergent on your marble floor, make sure that it is a very gentle and mile detergent, and you do not use very much of it.

I know that maintaining a marble floor must seem like quite a bit of work, but you should see your marble floor just like you would good wood furniture. Great care must be given it in order to maintain its delicate, and beautiful appearance.

You might consider using a sealer on the marble after you get it clean. It will help to keep stains at a minimum, and make it easier to clean. This can be purchased at most hardware stores.

Tepid water is the best thing to use in cleaning marble floors; and if you need to, a little very mild detergent.
