Tips for Cooking Pasta in Your Microwave

Marilyn Wright
Do you get tired of bringing water to a boil, adding your pasta, waiting until it comes back to a boil, and then standing there stirring and stirring and it still sticks?
Well, so do I!. I have always been lazy in the kitchen. When I was a child my Mom would have me standing at the stove stirring and stirring puddings until they came to a boil. Of course I would turn the burner up to make it boil faster and of course it would burn. I wasn't very helpful. Good thing my Mom loved me. Now they have those wonderful puddings you dont have to stand and stir and stir.

Down through the years, I still had the same problem. Then I noticed on the quick cooking rice box, directions for the microwave. It said add equal amounts of rice and water to a microwave safe bowl, set timer for 5 minutes, do at high power and the rice came out perfectly.
And I thought what if I can do this with pasta . Well, one of the first things I tried was cooking some orzo, but I didn't add enough water, and it burned, my microwave still has a burnt smell. I also had to do away with the dish. I practiced with times and amounts, the one thing I noticed, you have to have plenty of water.

I found out a good ratio was one cup of pasta to one quart of water,I'm using elbows as an example, for spaghetti it might be less, for penne it might be a little more. It all depends on your taste, I like mine a little aldente. I found that 20 minutes seems to the right amount of time.Use high power on your microwave.
Think how long it takes to cook it on the stove, you have to bring the water to a boil, then add the pasta, then wait for it to boil again, you have to stir it off and on, and the whole process takes more that 20 minutes. You may have to experiment with different times and amounts, but remember, like I said before, use plenty of water.
One of the best things is you don't have to stir it in the microwave, and when it is done, just stir, drain and serve with your favorite sauce. You will love it!

If you want to get a cheap and easy container built for making pasta in the microwave buy Healthy Choice's new meals that cook pasta in the microwave and reuse the container for your own pasta. I use one and it works perfectly. The lid has a built in strainer and there's a fill line that gives you the right amt so the water doesn't boil over. These things are made from pretty high quality plastic and cost about $2.50. Voila perfect microwave pasta every time.

I have been messing around with microwave pasta cooking myself and found it only took 6 minutes for me. I enjoy mine aldante too. I just put a whole box of Meijer Brand Macaroni and Cheese in a microwavable tupper-wear container and added an equal amount of water to pasta. Now I, not knowing how anything would work, decided I would closely watch the first microwave trial. Good thing too! The water tends to want to boil over alot when getting to the closing minute and a half, so you have to stand there and stop the microwave when it is about to overflow. So pretty much I traded watching the stove to watching the microwave. Microwave is still faster by much. However I must ask how powerful is your microwave? 20 minutes? Seems to me like a fairly old or not very powerful microwave. You can reach me at Deloryys@gmail.com
