Tips for Creating Christmas Checklists

Be Prepared for Holiday Shopping

Erin Duff
Whether or not you have a budget for this season's shopping, it's a good idea to have a list of what you need so you can determine how many trips you'll take to be prepared for the holiday. I find it helpful to create lists of not only what I would like to get, but for the things that are essential as well. Lost in the process? Here are some tips to help you along the way:

#1: Create a list of what needs to be bought before Christmas, and divide your list into categories. For example, I bake quite a bit, so I have a list of ideas of what I would like to make, and then I break that list down into ingredients I need. This way, I'm prepared for all the baking I want to do, and I'll have everything on hand when I need it.

#2: Some people find it's easier to create a list based upon specific time periods. For example, if you have a holiday party on December 15th and a gift exchange on December 18th, you know ahead of time that you'll need items for both events and can be prepared. Knowing what you need in advance and having it written down assures that you won't forget your obligations, and will help you as you get ready for other events.

#3: If you've created a budget for Christmas, then you have an idea of how much you want to spend per category of determined needs. Determine who you're shopping for, how much you are willing to spend per person, then write down ideas of gifts based on what you know the person would like. We do this each year and I keep the ever-changing list in my purse, so it's with me each time I go shopping. I have incorporated many of my lists into programs on my iPhone, which is another good way to keep track of what you need.

#4: Your list does not have to be set in stone, as you'll find yourself updating your list as the holidays draw near. Don't be afraid to cross things out, write down new ideas, or highlight the important things. Your goal is to ensure that you are organized and that you stay organized throughout the season's shopping trips. Don't let your hectic schedule keep you from having at least your basic needs organized.

#5: As you buy items, it's a good idea to keep a checklist of your spending either written in a notebook or in an Excel spreadsheet. My husband and I come home from each shopping trip, look at the receipts, and write down what we've spent in each category of needs. If you work with Excel, you can set up a formula to determine how much you have left for each person, and as long as you continue to update your list, you'll know exactly what you have, what you need, and how much money you can spend as you go along.

By following these tips, your holiday shopping should go smoothly and you can be prepared for the rush of the season. It's much easier to stay within a budget when you have your needs mapped out ahead of time, and knowing what you have and what you need can give you more time to enjoy the holidays instead of rushing to get things done. After all, isn't that what the holidays are all about?
