Start by choosing a miniature tree. You can purchase one at the craft store, you can get creative and use a cut branch from a real tree. Stick the branch into a block of styrofoam.
There are so many types of fun decorations you can use to liven up the little tree, so gather several materials and test around a little until you discover ones that fit well together and fit the child's personality. Look around your house for things to place on the tree. One suggestion in place of garland is to crochet a colorful string of yarn.
Stores sell battery operated strings of lights that are short in length, making it perfect to string along the mini tree. If you are using a styrofoam base, cut out a hole to hide the battery box in.
Next, you'll want to create a tree skirt to cover the battery box, hole, and unsightly styrofoam. All you need is a small amount of fabric like a used red tshirt cut up. Cut a circle large enough to fit around the base. Cut a line to the center of the circle and stop. Cut a small hole in the center, then place around the tree. If you want to get even more creative, use glue paint to decorate the skirt first.
The ornaments can be the funnest part of decorating your tree. Look for mismatched earrings around the house, garage sales, or thrift stores. Hang on the tree branches. If you cannot find earrings useful for decoration, you can create your own ornaments from items such as fruit loops, beads with a string loop, or anything that comes to your imagination!
How cute are tiny little presents that fit under your mini tree? Save up those little boxes jewelry comes in, or even Altoids tins. Using regular wrapping paper, wrap the little boxes and use thin ribbon to wrap around and tie a bow on. For an extra touch, include tiny little presents or notes in each of the boxes.
In order to create the illusion of snow, you have several options. You can use a white spray can designed to look like snow and lightly spray the tree before adding ornaments and such. Another way is to cut up cotton balls into tiny pieces and sprinkle on the tree, or even glue onto the branches.
You'll want to top your tree off with something eye-catching. The easiest way to go here is by using a regular sized ornament borrowed from your regular sized tree. Traditional tree toppers are stars and angels. If you can find an ornament of this shape that would fit snugly on the top of your mini tree, this would be perfect. However, you can use any item on top of your tree that represents what Christmas means to you!
Hope you and your children have an amazing Christmas this year!
