Tips for Creating a Profitable Small Business Concept

L. Vincent Poupard
When people find out that I have a background as a business consultant, they will often tell me that they would love to own a business, but have no clue what type. These are the tips that I give for coming up with a profitable small business concept. Even if you have a small business concept already, these tips will help fine tune it.

Do What You Know

Your small business concept should circulate around what you know. A former client of mine opened up a business that supplies products to car dealerships, and he came up with this idea after working at dealerships for 15 years. He went into a field that he knew and where people knew him. It has ensured his future growth.

Knowledge creates confidence and confidence creates business. If your small business concept revolves around a product, market or service that you know, it will show. If you do not know your chosen field well, you customers will notice this in the early stages of your business, and will be discouraged from coming back. I have seen hundreds of businesses close their doors because of small business owners that had to spend more time on learning, and less time growing their business.

Learn and Prove What Will Set You Apart

As you are developing your small business concept, think about what will set your business apart from others. Is your boutique going to focus on having east coast clothing in an area where most people can only get west coast clothing? Is your grocery store only going to sell locally grown food in the shadow of the superstores that do not list where the food is from? This step will help you to create a valid business plan, and mission statement. Make sure that you always keep these ideas at the core of your business. Everything else should work around this.

Know Your Local Market Before Opening Your Doors

Make sure that you research the local area where you are considering opening your small business. Your location is almost as important to your small business concept as what will set you apart. Make sure that your business conforms to the needs, ideas, ideals and customs of the area where you are opening. If you are opening a corner store in an Asian community, make sure that you are going to sell snacks and other types of foods that the Asian community would buy on a regular basis. Do not move a rockin' nightclub into a community that caters more to the older generations.

By keeping these tips in mind, you should be able to create a small business concept that will be profitable. Remember, though, these tips are not for just the planning stage or when you open your doors. These three tips should stay with you for as long as you own the business. They will help you sustain at the very least, and grow at the very best.
