The first thing you want to do before attempting to cut down a tree is evaluate the dangers. Remember it will probably be more dangerous then you think. To do that, judge how high your tree is and measure out how far in a circle the tree could fall from how tall it is. Once you have done that, remove all automobiles and other things you do not want the tree to fall on away from the tree, giving them a lot more room just in case you estimated incorrectly. Also keep other people, and especially children, far away as you are doing this. Once you have done that judge how high your tree is and measure out how far in a circle the tree could fall from how tall it is. Remember if the tree is very large, by your house, or other unmovable thing of importance you might want to call a professional tree cutting service. Also if the tree has grown on a hill or other place where you will not have a good footing you will also want to call a professional.
Now that you have everything out of the way begin your cut. Carefully use a saw to cut a large wedge out of the side of the tree. This will be the way you want your tree to fall so carefully do it to the side that the tree is leaning. Now, go to the other side of the tree and begin to saw at the other side. This will weaken what is holding the tree upright and cause the rest of it to brake and fall over. If you start to hear snapping at any time you are working get away from the tree. That is why it is important to stand on the other side of the tree while you are making the final cut. Once the tree has fallen take the saw and cut it into manageable pieces in order to pull it to a place where you can store, burn, sell or dispose of.
Remember if at any time you feel that the job is to dangerous you should stop and call a professional tree cutter. It is better to be safe then sorry.
