Tips on Dealing with Arthritic Insomnia

K.S.
If you suffer from arthritis, one of the hardest things you probably deal with is insomnia because of the pain keeping you up at night. It's a pretty vicious cycle: the insomnia prevents you from getting the rest you need to stay healthy and that, in turn, will make your arthritis worse. Even though it may seem like there's no way out of the situation, there are some things you can do to fight arthritis and it's important that you consider all of your available options in order to get a better night's sleep every time you go to bed.

Anyone that suffers from arthritis will find that they have chronic insomnia, the type of insomnia that doesn't go away and occurs for a long period of time. The pain will not only keep some awake but will also occur along with illness; and some patients find that their joints are painful and inflamed after they do any activity.

Another reason for arthritis insomnia is the high level of stress that most arthritis patients have. They worry about a doctor's appointment, which causes them to stay awake all night; and it doesn't matter if you're a young patient whose just been recently diagnosed or an older person whose had problems with arthritis for many years.

Arthritis insomnia can also be a side effect of the medication that you're using to treat the pain associated with your condition. These medicines (which can also be addicting, too) may get rid of the pain but unbeknown to you, they may also be keep you up most of the night. Of course the flip side is that, without taking the medication, you may still be awake all night... and you get the pain of arthritis for added measure.

So how do you help alleviate this insomnia? Well the first step you can take is realizing you're not alone in this. Talk to your doctor about any medications you're taking that might be keeping you up at night, and make a commitment and take some steps to rid yourself of as much stress in your life as you can. You and your doctor are the only ones who can take the right steps to get the insomnia in your life under control. Talking to him or her and coming up with ideas is perhaps the best step you can take to get you on the road to recovery.
