Tips for Dealing with Jealousy

Debi Rideout
Have your ever been jealous or envious of someone else? Have you ever been a target of someone else's jealousy or envy? It is not a fun way to feel whether you are the one feeling it, or if you are on the receiving end of it. Jealousy and envy are dangerous emotions to have because you usually do not accomplish much by having these types of feelings. These emotions can just fester; if you are the one feeling it you can do some real damage in your own life and to those of others that you are jealous of. Here are 10 tips to help you with your jealousy or with those jealous of you:

If you are jealous yourself:

1. Appreciate

The first thing you need to do is to appreciate the things that you have in your own life. Do not let the jealous monster ruin the good things that you have in your own life.

2. Be Honest

Be honest with yourself. Why do you feel the need to be jealous of others? Is there something lacking in your own life or self? Think of good ways to achieve things that you might be able to achieve yourself by working hard to change things so that you are feeling happy and not jealous of others.

3. Perfect Life

Let us be real with each other. There is no such thing as a perfect life. Sure you might be envious or jealous of someone else, but there is definitely something in their life that you would not be jealous or envious of. Most bad things in people's lives are not on display for the whole world to see. The term the grass is always greener on the other side is not always true. You might actually have a way better life than the person you are jealous of. So, be thankful for what you have and how your life is.

4. Get Over It for Health Reasons

Seriously tell yourself to get over it. Mentally tell yourself that having negative emotions are mentally and physically unhealthy for you. How many times have you stayed awake missing sleep because your jealousy is eating you up inside? When you get jealous or envious of someone else your blood pressure usually starts to rise and that is not a healthy thing.

5. Self Esteem

If you are jealous or envious of someone else, then it is time to build up your own self esteem. Make a list of all the wonderful qualities or things that you have that are wonderful. Every person is unique. We all have special qualities that would make someone else jealous if they were lacking those qualities. Build yourself up, and be happy with who and what you have.

Dealing With People Who Are Jealous of You:

1. Ignore Them

Seriously the best thing to do with people that are mean to you because they are jealous of you is to simply just ignore them. It is on them if they are jealous or envious of you. It is not something that you can usually change because it is on them to change their negative emotions. Do not dwell on their negativity. Just be happy in your own life, and dwell on that.

2. Pep Talk

If someone you care about is jealous of you, maybe you might want to give them a positive pep talk. Tell them that they can achieve their own dreams. Assure them that with a little hard work they too can get good things out of life.

3. Share

Maybe the person who is jealous or envious of you likes something that you have that is tangible. If it is not a big deal to you, maybe you could just share with them. Sometimes it is something as easy as sharing that can stop jealousy and envy in its tracks.

4. Compliments

Why do you not just compliment them? If there is something about them or that they have that is good; just tell them. Let them know that they have something that is good about them or something that they have. It will make them feel good. Plus, hopefully, they will stop being jealous or envious of you.

5. Grass is Greener Theory

You can always be truthful with them. You could tell them the negative things about your life. Maybe they will realize that they have no reason to be jealous or envious of you. After all, no one has a perfect life, and being jealous or envious is just a big waste of time.

I think your article gets more to the point of what people should do about jealousy. Mine was wrote from the perspective of types of jealousy because I didn't think everyone knew what was happening when it happened to them. Man we could have combined and did a killer story!
