Tips for Dealing with an Ulcerative Colitis Diagnosis with an Open Mind and Positive Outlook

The way that you look at the things that happen to you in life says a lot about the type of person that you are. I guess that I would consider myself a very positive and open minded person. Having to deal with ulcerative colitis has taught me how to be those two things.

Finding out that you have a condition that isn't easily treated or cured is difficult. When I found out that I have ulcerative colitis, I was shocked, to say the least. The thoughts that went through my head at the time were very negative and very hard to deal with. I thought that my life, as I knew it, was over.

As it turns out, being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis has been a blessing in disguise. I am sure that not many people who have ulcerative colitis will say that. In my case, I choose to look at the positive things that ulcerative colitis has taught me.

I have learned that with a positive attitude, I can come out on top of any situation. Sure, living with ulcerative colitis has been a challenge. There are, however, a lot of positives to dealing with this condition.

As long as I eat a healthy diet and take my vitamins, ulcerative colitis is not a life threatening condition. I know that, more than likely, I will not die from my ulcerative colitis. I can be thankful for that because some people who are dealing with a medical condition know that their condition will probably be the cause of their death.

I know that I am healthy in every other way. When you are trying to find a treatment regime that works, you spend a lot of time with your doctor. Because of this, I know that I am otherwise a healthy woman.

I have missed out on some events that I would have like to attend. This was because my ulcerative colitis was not controlled at the time. Those times taught me that I need to enjoy the things that I can do. Before I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I took all of these activities for granted.

I have learned that some things that sound outrageous may be good ideas. When dealing with ulcerative colitis, sometimes, you have to be creative and think outside of the box. Trying solutions and suggestions that sound odd has taught me to stay open minded.

Overall, I honestly believe that the only way to survive living with ulcerative colitis, without becoming angry and bitter, is to keep a smile on your face through the pain and to keep an open mind about ways to cope. These are the things that living with ulcerative colitis has taught me. I hope that I can pass these lessons on to my children without them having to suffer like I did to learn them.
