Tip 1: Paint the Ceiling
After choosing the colors for the room, paint your octagonal ceiling in your accent hue rather than the same color used on the walls . This will draw the eye upwards, showcasing the unique curvature.
Tip 2: Add Trim Around the Top
Trim out the top of the room with decorative molding, stained or painted to match the wood furniture pieces in the room. This will not only help to showcase the shape, it is also a great way to tie in the rest of the decor.
Tip 3: Install Matching Wainscot or Base Molding & Chair Rails
Instead of using standard molding around the bottom of the space, which will not mimic the octagonal curve (unless the whole room is in that shape), find some wainscoting that has the shapes already engraved in it and painted or stained to match the ceiling trim. If that is not possible, create your own by painting flat wainscoting with the shapes or wood-burning them in. Another option is to install matching base molding and chair railing and then hang a printed wallpaper in between.them or use a decorative paint technique to fill it in that contains octagons.
Tip 4: Buy Octagonal Furniture Pieces
Buy an octagon shaped dining room table and try to find chairs that have the shape in their backs as well (or use a painting technique to put them there as you did on the wall if you wish to tie it all in together). Purchase a buffet and/or hutch that has curved details rather than straight squared or standard round corners to mimic the shape around them.
Tip 4: Bring in Octagonal Artwork
If you cannot find pieces of artwork that are already framed in the shape, you can purchase individual frames and cut prints or photos to fit. Instead, a large mirror is easily found in this shape and can be the only artwork you need in a well decorated space.
Tip 5: Add Octagonal Dishes & Accessories
Buy a set of octagonal dishes to put in your china hutch. Use smaller plates or mirrors in the shape as candle holders on your tables and use an octagonal vase as your centerpiece, filled with your favorite bouquet of flowers.
With these 5 tips on how to decorate a dining room with an octagon ceiling, you will turn what could have been an interior design dilemma, into a conversational wow factor.
