Tips for Decorating Your Fireplace

Perhaps you already have an existing mantel on your fireplace and you want to give it a more updated look. Consider sanding down the wood as much as possible and restaining the mantel with a lighter or darker color stain. You might want to take a look at other fire places to see which would look better, lighter or darker stain for your mantel. If you have a fire place that has been painted you will want to sand down the existing paint and stain it, if it's real wood. You can also sand down the mantel and paint over it with a different color paint. You will want the fireplace to stand out in the room, since it should be the accent of the room. If you have a television next to the fireplace, move the television away so that it doesn't compete with the fireplace or hide it.

If you don't have a mantel you will want to purchase one to surround your fireplace. You can buy pieces for your mantel separately or you can purchase the entire mantel to surround your fireplace. Try to buy one with as much molding and variety as possible. You can purchase different scroll like pieces that you can glue onto the mantel as well.

If you don't have a fireplace you can always purchase an electric fireplace. You can purchase one of these for several hundred dollars from any local home improvement store such as Menards or Home Depot. This is a nice way to add a little bit of decoration to the warm. These fireplaces are actually a good way to add a little bit more money into the room. If you want to sell your home adding a fireplace to your home will determine whether or not your home will sell. Perhaps a person really wants a fireplace and your home doesn't have one. With an electric fireplace you can still purchase a mantel to place around the fireplace.

You can go to the craft store and purchase different items that you can place on the mantel such as decorative vases with floral arrangements. You can also purchase fake pieces of fruit which will add a little bit more color and life to your fireplace. You never want to make your fireplace feel cluttered so you will want to keep the decor down to a minimum. I would suggest some type of decorative candle and candleholder. Something with lace and glitter always draws attention to the item. Put two items of equal size on each end of the fireplace. You can then fill in the middle location with fruit or a few pictures.
