Tips for Decorating Your Halloween Haunted House

J Ronson
Halloween is right around the corner. All the good little ghouls will be knocking on your front door in a few short weeks. Why not give them something to remember by designing the best house haunt you can?

Pick a Theme

The most important part of a good Halloween house haunt is picking a theme. Use your imagination. Anyone can do a simple graveyard with store bought supplies, but what can you do to stand out? Do you have a favorite horror movie? Scary book? Odd painting? Spooky song? Urban legend? Anything can be used as inspiration for a good house haunt. For example, last year, my yard was set up as a deserted carnival. Signs were placed to various spooky attractions and circus tent styled fabric was hung above the door.

Themes do not have to be that specific for a Halloween house haunt. You can choose something intangible instead. A color, a mood, an emotion, even a scientific theory could be the basis of a good house haunt.

Go wild with your theme. If you can imagine it, you can find a way to make it work.

Commit to the Theme

The second most important part of a good Halloween house haunt is sticking to the theme. If you choose to base your yard around a witch casting a spell, you probably don't want to have a fake car crash victim and a sea monster on your front lawn. Likewise, if you choose sadness as a theme, a grinning witch is probably out of place.

Whatever your theme is, you should show consistency in presenting it. Brainstorm a list of ideas for props and displays. Then evaluate what does and does not fit your Halloween house haunt theme. The presentation will be that much more memorable for consistency.

Plan the Halloween House Haunt

The final important aspect of a good Halloween house haunt theme is the plan. Sketch out how you want the yard to look. Write out where you want all your pieces to be. However you choose to design it, make sure you have a plan in mind. It saves a lot of frustration in the long run and helps to create a more cohesive theme.

Conclusion

By having a cohesive theme, you will be able to create a very memorable experience for anyone who sees it. Halloween is a holiday. Make the most of the celebration by being consistent, creative, and organized in setting up your own Halloween house haunt. This will allow you to use any combination of homemade and store bought props to make a fun, memorable display.
